Today i did HA with my guild , we played a blanced team of two ports , one offensive spirt summoner , a w/n and a w/e
We got owned by VIm , i don't see how such a build can own sucha balanced team and thus i was wondering
Why is it so powerful , how does it work and how do you shut it down
It works because they can spam traps, usually constant supply of healing+energy, traps add tons of conditions+pressure on healing and the monks just can't keep up. Best bet is to at least have a draw conditions character in your balanced build, with the monks having mend ailment or mend condition, Restore conditions always works well but eats up an elite slot. Trick is to never go after the VIM team let them come to you, have your caster wand as many trappers as they can while your warriors clean up. IMO if you can stop the traps, have good player positioning balanced teams can win but with effort needed. The 6vs6 state of HA is a joke anyways, it lets the gimmik builds shine and the less skilled blanaced team fail. If you want try as a guild to grab some quick fame, make a dual smite team.
2 smiters, one with draw conditions
W/E
W/e or thumper or asn
1 boon prot
1 blessed light monk

As the above poster pointed out, kiting is the way to go. Don't stand next to their trappers and if one of them sits down next to do, move back. Do this as a whole team - slowly move backwards while focus firing their trappers with ranged attacks whenever possible. VIMway has next to no defense against hexes for example, so degen takes them apart in no time. Healing in general is a weakness of that build, so all you need to do is damaging them out - even with wands if you have nothing else. If you can produce spikes, they are dead anyway. Kite, spike, kite - rinse and repeat.

We had good success just forcing the ViM team to come to us. We ran a lot of fire spike, so we were able ot out-damage the regen pretty well.

I'm surprised that your offensive ritualist spirit spammer wasnt enough, by himself, totake care of the VIMWAY.
That's 3-4 extra allies all wanding trappers.
Your ritualist could also have taken mend body and soul, which would have been enough to help with the conditions.

A lot of beating Vimway is just in the strategy you use much more than what your build as, and others above pretty much explained it.
Their total lack of corpse control helps too, and if you have someone that can bring minions, you can actually overwhelm them pretty fast (A Tainted Warder can always sacrifice a spot for Bone Fiends for example. Or a Flesh Golem can be used and you Death Nova him so he'll die in trap, blow up, you raise him, blow him up again, etc). You have 3 pets giving you free minions, and then if there's fiends shooting at them it adds significant damage. If nothing else, Putrid Explosion isn't bad and with their lack of any real healing can pretty easily lead to chain deaths even if it takes 5 sec to recharge.
Don't make a build to beat Vimway, just learn how to play your build to beat it.
Depending on what your running, beating Vimway in most instances shouldnt be a difficult task.
Most good teams WONT be running Vimway and are more than likely PUGs. Soft targets the warriors will be after, kite, bodyblock, kite, etc. I notice that most lower ranked groups or pugs havent learned about bodyblocking.
Again, depending on what youre running, get right in there on the trappers. Dont let them prep etc. Wand the trappers and wand NR/QZ. Your warrior *should* be the one taking the traps. If you're running something like a smite build and have a thumper with a pet, send the pet in and smite off of it possibly.
What I notice about when Vim wins is conditions are on everyone. You cant just stand around and let the trappers hit you. The maps are large enough you can move the battle to where you want it (and the traps arent). The key to Vim is just keeping the conditoins off of everyone. If they never trap you they wont win.

Get someone to spam Matryl is one way. Echo CoF mesmer is also effective against spirit casters and trappers.

If it's public knowledge that the opposing team is using ViM heavily then you're team should be able to out manuver them.
ViM will shut itself down when your team is spread out.

take a nuker and a SS necro, only really need 1 warrior for balance in 6v6, but vim should be easy fame.

Echo CoF is interesting but that costs 45 energy in a rather short time span.
The real trick to ViM is just hitting the trappers while they are trapping. Rigor Mortis or Seeking Arrows are nice but not necessary while they have whirling up. As you hit them, their skills are easily interrupted. Also, just kite backwards and never run into them unless you are just triggering traps for safe passage of your team. If you are in an AoE trap, move! Standing still is the same as /resign against ViM.
RC I think is the best defense against the trap damage/conditions. If you can RC and Heal Party, then the only problem will be adren spikes by the IWAY warriors. A guardian and prot spirit from the RC can stop that as well.
Play smart and almost any team can beat a ViM.
By kiting and avoiding being hit by traps you are quickly depleting the trappers of their energy pool. Stick and move the way a boxer would, and you will easily defeat them. On most maps there are plenty of land features to make kiting simpler. Constantly wand the trappers. Whirling does not block everything. A lucky interrupt on a trap or healing spring will quickly reduce their damage and healing.
A little off the subject, but while playing the Rt in a modded ViM I found psychiatric distraction to be very effective at interrupting my long casts (Rt/R so no help avoiding interrupts).

Psychic Distraction ignores all anti-interrupt skills because in addition to the interrupt the skill is disabled.
dont walk in the traps (and interrupt), kill rangers first. ANd dont fight the pets.

Most vim teams are weak in spike healing, relying on iway on the warriors and healing spring/troll unguent for rangers.
With the nerf to mantra of resolve, all offensive trappers are susceptible to the same tactic: Interrupts.
If all the casters on the team stayed back(kiting, etc), each person picking a trapper to wand, it should be a simple matter to keep melee types healed and condition free while they kill the trappers in seconds.
As a warrior(melee type), if you see whirling defense being used, play smart. Count down 20 seconds, fill your adrenaline up, and after that time go unload on the ranger in question. A warrior with full adrenaline skills should be able to kill the ranger down faster than they can be healed(no monks around, if they have a healer, then you need to priortize the healer above all else). It's possible to kill the ranger with whirling up but you are likely to eat a few traps on the way, but nonetheless you could interrupt a few key traps while the whirling is still up, so this option is left to your best judgement.
You can nearly ignore the warriors, since if your monks can't handle warrior hate, then you need to consider adding such capability to your build. It's the trap pressure, that causes teams to fold, due to degen, and being crippled(unable to kite).
Vim is especially weak to spike damage so if your build operates like that then you should have no problems. Don't waste any time and begin spiking immediately, even if the 1st spike isnt combo'd with full adrenaline, there is often enough damage to kill someone or at the very least disrupts the vim team before they can reach heavy trap density.
ViMWAY = Freefame
Spread out, don't let the area damage take you down.
Restore Condition just owns faces, even better against ViM.
Focus damage, you should first spike Warriors down.
Kill critical spirits (nature), if you can't, fall back.
if you can't, fall back.Should also add, fall back into a location where you can still manuever. Too often I see people trapping themselves in their spawn with ViM just outside the door setting traps.
Have all everyone with a wand pick a trapper...AND USE THEIR WANDS!!!!!!!!! O and a whole lot of kitting will be needed if that doesn't work. Keep in mind people taht those trappers are easily interupted.

I know one time I did a Vim group with 2 Wa/Me using blackout and ViM. We ended up facing another ViM group and had a 2 minute stand-off before I tossed off the idea of using both blackouts timed on one ranger at a time. Ended up killing off about 2 rangers, then slaughtered the rest of the team. Spread damage can be done when your group is not bunched up. When you are bunched up focus fire on one ranger at a time if you have melee/ranged getting blinded by dust traps. Spike after they ViM, or use some method to remove usage of it.
VIM built is gonna be dead when faced in 1 month.
1 Devish: AOE melee with Melandru's Avatar, coupled with a skill that can hit thru evade stances e.g Dev/War with wild blow = 4 dead vims
Once the vims are dead, the iways are almost harmless to a 3 monk backline.

Just curious do spirit attacks actually interrupt the traps? And can they be blocked/evaded? Because they seem to be really great counters, and plus now they do huuuge damage. Especially to VIM teams, since they lack hex removal (Painful Bond) and healing. I really want to go back and do more HA... Rits seem to be quite the ViM counters (there's also Rt/Mo with Martyr and Resilients, and Mend Body and Soul).
