Part I: Invertebrates

This is the first chapter concentrating on invertebrates. To the layman that is bugs and other squishy things. Note that this only references non-tameable, non-pet animals. There are many pet threads elsewhere. Please do not discuss pets here.

Please let the Tyrian Zoological Survey (just me for the moment...but hey it sounds so lovely and pompous) know if they have missed anything. I'd like to keep this updated and correct. Just contact me on one of my ign's below. I tend to be on late PST.

Tarnished Coast Coral. Coral is found throughout Tyria and is most easily seen at Lionís Arch Harbor. Coral used to live in the Jade Sea of Cantha, but today its brittle remains form a painful barrier to travel. Such shallow water coral is an indication that the waters around Lionís Arch are probably quite warm.

Unidentified. This strange creature is found in Lionís Arch Harbor. It is still debatable as to if this is an animal or a plant.

Giant Ascalon Land Snail. Believed extinct in the Searing, this huge mollusk is known to have produced large and precious pearls.

Sea Stars Found in Lionís Arch harbor, these creatures are often seen in groups.

Shing Jea Giant Star. Found on the north shore of Shing Jea Island, the petrified remains of these sea stars are also found in the Jade Sea.

Krytan Spider Crab. A staple of the Krytan diet, these crabs are seen at the market in Lionís Arch and in the pot at Bergen Hot Springs. Also, I believe I have observed this crab in one of the guildhalls.

Shing Jea Tiger Claw Crab. A beach combing crab found only on Shing Jea island

Black Curtain Orb Weaver. An impressive spider of face-sized proportions, this spider is found in Kryta around poison water swamps.

Ascalon Mottled Yellow. A yellow butterfly that was once very common in Ascalon. There have been sightings post-searing near Old Ascalon.

Ascalon Mottled Yellow (http://www.michelewickham.com/gw/presearingyellow.jpg)

Ascalon Clouded White. Believed extinct after the Searing. Any sightings should be reported.

Ascalon Giant Moth. Believed extinct after the Searing. Any sightings should be reported. This moth was encounted near Wizard's Folly. Subject hovers approximately 10ft from ground, so a clear picture is difficult.

Ascalon Giant Moth (http://www.michelewickham.com/gw/follymoth.jpg)

Tyrian Morpho Blue. Extinct in Ascalon, but still thriving in Kryta and Maguuma. Can most easily be viewed in Sanctum Cay.

Dragonfly. Unsure of status in Ascalon as this image was captured shortly before searing. Field operative is currently scouring wetlands in Tyria and Elona for signs of this elusive and beautiful insect, nearly 8 inches long.

Honey Bees. Unsure of status in Ascalon, an informant told me there are what appear to be bee hives in Kryta. Will investigate.

Blood Flies. Found in dark miasmal areas of Kryta and Maguuma, especially around undead activity. These were encountered in the canyon leading to Majestyís Rest.

Quite the zoologist... Nice collection! How late did you stay up photo-shopping these? Or did you do that this morning? Did you see the crab cooking in North Kryta Province (mission town)?

I can't remember my second grade or high school freshman science lessons... Are fish invertebrae?

Also, my friend who works at SeaWorld (San Diego) refuses to say "starfish" and instead refers to them as "seastar"... because "they are not fish!" Comments on this? :D

(borrows Kalidri's thought bubble)

.oO0 (I guess it's kinda like panda... in Mandarin, panda is "mao-xiong [cat bear]" or "xiong-mao [bear cat]"... and people always ask "is it a cat or a bear??")

::edit::

There are crabs cooking in the Gates of Kryta mission town... ><"

<-- Don't like seafood.

Fish are vertebrates. Fish will be the next section because there are so many fish in GW...started to do it this morning and decided to just do bugs n stuff! Yes I did miss out on the North Kryta crabs...also my sister told me there are giant hermit crabs in luxon territory that I should document. Also planning a section on Jade Sea Paleontology (that is all the stuff fossilized in Jade).

I agree on the starfish thing actually. They really are nowhere like fish....they are anatomically very peculiar (speaking from experience, having cut up alot of invertebrates for my degrees). Eyes on the end of the legs, mouth in the center, movement by hydrolics, and suction cup feet...very weird.

Such a shame that we never do get to see the Giant Ascalonian Land Snail.

Snails are FTW. :cloud9:

EDIT: nvm, didn't notice it was just fish and the likes...

Good Bestiary.

Weird, never have even noticed those spiders. Not only that, but I didn't know that starfish weren't fish..

Anywho..Good bestiary, must have taken awhile to find all of those.

Blood flies! Grrr. Those buggers mucked up a lot of my screens I'd taken the first time I wandered through that area.

On another note: like others have said, quite the collection you've amassed. Hadn't ever seen (or noticed) the Black Orb Curtain Weaver before (or if I had I was a little too preoccupied to give it more than a passing glance). I like the list, thanks for sharing.

Have you seen will o' wisps in North Kytra Provience area? They haven't been named that way but I assume they were...

Also there's a bunch of eggs in Twin Serpant Lakes area.

Yeah I have seen the willo the wisps...I'll include the eggs in my reptile/bird section when I get to it (work has been slowing me down...have not even been writing fanfic recently). Thanks for that!

I found something that looks like a bat in the breach.

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/4112/gw465qj5.th.jpg (http://img168.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gw465qj5.jpg)

It's right where the sun is.

Kalidri
09-02-2007, 07:05
Yeah there are lots of bats in the Ascalon area. If you turn up the sound loud enough you can acutally hear them chattering away too.

And umm...another reminder to finish this off...I have the pictures, just need the will to caption and link...

I may borrow your picture of the bats since I have not been out to do mammals yet. Thanks!

Quintus Antonius

That actually makes a lot of sense. Ascalon has a giant underground tunnel network, the Catacombs. Even though human size entrances may be collapsed, I guarantee the bats still have a way in and out.

Kalidri

Last time I had a character in presear (I had him take pictures of the butterflies, fish etc in presear...and the rabbit of course). I had him look for bats in the catacombs and did not see any. Kinda disappointed as it only seems natural. Anyhow, if anyone is in the catacombs and DOES see bats, please snap a piccie :)

Quintus Antonius

There are bats flying around in that area where you light the candles in the poison water. Look up, or near light, you can see them flying around.

Ah that figures, the one place I did not look. My throw away character was level 1 and slow degen was not my cup of tea. I will have to roll something and go splelunking.

Neatest thing in Nightfall for wildlife has to be the birds at Hallowed Point when you destroy the Staff of the Mists. They look like Goshawks to me. Hmm the tuna in the water at Nundu bay are cool as well.

*pokes herself with pointy things* Make page make page Kali...dooooo eeet.

Speaking of bestiary and stuff, last night I came across this unique looking plant - I never saw it before anywhere in Tyria (the world) so I took screenies for you along with map of its location.

Will post later. As for pre-searing - I currently have a character in there, do feel free to make requests.

I did Divinity coast recently and spotted a nice group of seagulls froma cliff... i'll try and get a SS for you.

I think they meant that we never get to see the snail itself, just the shell.

Anyway, I also have a toon in pre-sear if you need anything.

To the invertebrates page (first page...love being a mod sometimes) I have added these new finds:

Ascalon Moth (presearing)
Dragonfly (presearing)
Giant Sea Star and its Jade Sea fossil

Hang on, Snaileys don't make Pearls! Other shell-based things do, but not snaileys!

And also, Will-o-the-Wisps aren't creatures. they're a swamp gas phenomenon that happen to look pretty awesome.

Quintus Antonius
17-03-2007, 17:30
Typically only bivalved members of the molluska family make pearls. That is most certainly a snail shell, and it most certainly contains a pearl. However, I also find it highly unlikely a gastropod could produce a pearl. That makes me wonder if the pearl wasn't just sitting under the shell, rather than being in it.

Kalidri
17-03-2007, 17:56
Ah...but snails do produce pearls, infact any mollusk with a mantle that produces an external shell can make a pearl, its just a filter feeder like a mussel, oyster or clam is much more likely to get a grain of sand or other irritant to start a pearl. There are references to pearls forming in snails - abalone and conch are both sea snails known to have pearls.

I agree that the pearl could have just been hidden there, but hey, mideval folks believed mice came from rags, and my agent is probably just about that educated :)

As for will o the wisps...I may or may not include them. From the standpoint of my character living in GW, she will probably think of them as living phenomenon. I doubt Zenaida knows what swamp gas is, it is likely she thinks they are alive or spirits or some sort.

Quintus Antonius
17-03-2007, 18:09
Will O' Wisps are in fact living creatures in the world of Tameril. They may be in Tyria too.

You forgot the MASSIVE hermit crabs found in the jade sea, closest are in zos shivos channel.

Barinthus
18-03-2007, 17:03
My suggestion to Kalidri - decide on a zone and post somewhere (here maybe) announcing that you would like to explore this zone for animals and plant documentation, whatever, and set a day and time. Volunteers can meet and form parties to visit that zone (we all doesn't have to be in same party). If you want to be efficient, could divide parts of zone to explore by parties but that'd be a huge headache.

Anyway volunteers could basically clean it out of all mobs and take screenshots of what they find and upload to imageshack or whatever. Then let you access their imageshack and you can pick shots you like.

Just a thought

I've concluded the Luxons are a smelly group of people. They live in an area with no water, and they ride giant hermit crabs. I don't know about you, but I've smelt the cage of smaller hermit crabs, and they STINK! Imagine how bad a big one smells!

*remembers the hermit crabs in greece a long time ago*

yuk. I'm changing to kurzick side NOW.

speaking of wich, does the echovald forrest have any inverberates? and if no, which ones could survive there? I vote for cockroaches, they live about anywhere.

Quintus Antonius
19-03-2007, 15:17
Mantids are probably invertabrate.

Brainbasher
23-03-2007, 21:20
I know/think that the mantids are not insects as we know them because insects have a very simple blueprint and I think you can't just scale it up.
Example: exoskeletons, the thickness of it is proportional with the size of the crawly so the mantids should be 80% shell. Lungs same story, insects use tubes that run through the body and deliver oxigen directly to the cells, this works great up to a foot but much less above that.

My guess:
Mantids are a form of invertebrates with an inner bonelike structure to support the shell, some form of primitive lungs and a heart-blood veins structure.
