View Full Version : Non-stats benefits for higher levels?

Some people want the game to have a high level cap so they feel like their characters are growing as they play, and to have a goal to strive for.

Some other people don't want a higher level cap, since this is going to split the player base: even if the difference is small, someone level 50 would be better than someone at level 20, and so the later character would be shunned out of parties in favor of those who have grinded more.

I'm curious to see how would the community react to a tentative compromise, so...

...What would you people think if the benefits a higher level character had were not linked to his stats, but rather to other aspects of the game? Instead of being more powerful or having more attribute points, higher level characters could have other advantages, such as more storage space, small discounts at some traders, a higher probability of getting better drops from some chests or something along those lines.

This way, we would avoid situations in which high level characters would always be better for a party than medium level characters, at the same time higher level characters would have reasons to grind for experience.

In other hand, we would still be limiting content based on grind, and those who want a higher level cap may consider these benefits to be too small in comparison to just becoming more powerful.

Opinions? Like I said in my previous post, good idea, meh, bad idea or heresy?

Your hands could grow up bigger every time you level up.

First, remember that Anet have mentioned that they are considering implementing a Sidekick system that should, ideally, eliminate problems associated with level disparity, such as level discrimination. How effective this may be remains to be seen, but, if we do get such a broad range of levels, I'm assuming that a solution is already being worked on.

Second, as to your suggestion of offering non-stat rewards as long-term goals for playing, this seems rather like EotN's armour sets that weren't available for purchase until a character had gone through a certain amount of that other type of level "grind": accumulating reputation points. This is something I could do without. If I remember correctly, no-one was that excited by this, though people ultimately realised it wasn't necessary to repeatedly farm one or two areas ad nauseam til they got the required rep.

I have no problem with improving a character by completing missions/quests or making my way to locations on the map, but chasing levels isn't the way I want to play this kind of game. Scoring the big numbers is for arcade games, not role-players that try to tell a story or give you a world to explore. I prefer the idea of playing the game for the experience rather than the XP. Chasing levels to increase my storage or buy a new hat still takes my focus from the, uh, big adventure and redirects it to my experience bar. Your proposal doesn't change that for me.

I want GW2 to be character level free and, if I remember correctly, you do too. I'm guessing this is your attempt at finding a reasonably palatable solution for the problems that come with high level caps. Not there yet.

Levels could be like fame.
Looks good but still doesn't tell much.

I really like this idea, GW1 hints of this for such things as town ownership in Factions (cheaper purchases) , EoTN faction etc.

I'd also like to see character advancement, development in the form of Enviromental Unlocks. Housing, Guild Hall development, other means, that allow the players to actually aquire treasure, fame, favor, collections . . . . Much like what has been hinted at and suggested in GW1.

Funny how Arena Net has hinted at so many things, then folk like you and me finally discover or get what they're trying to achieve. GW 1 has hinted at many possibilities, that if developed fully may revolutionize the MMO genre.

WoW's next MMO will be a GW clone
