View Full Version : What race will you pick for your Ranger?

Other professions already have a similar thread, so why not make it for the ranger?
I'm aware that there's a general thread, but it's always nice to see a poll, showing where most rangers will be. Feel free to lock this thread if you have to ().
Simple question: what race will you pick for your ranger? Feel free to explain yourself aswell!
I will personally pick a Human, because my ranger will be an adventurer, seeking the glory of his ancestors. Any profession could do this, but Rangers (translated into Dutch as "Dolers", in LOTR-books, which means people who travel around the world) have this - go out and explore the world, seeking glory and fame to them. You could say Norn could do this well, but my Norn will be a warrior, and I feel less connected to any race other than Humans (since they were the only playable race in GW1).
Asura Rangers sound cool too, with big pets, and I'll probably roll one just to see how they look with Drakes, but unless they look REALLY cool, I'm not going to pick one...
Therefore, Human Ranger.
PS: The poll is single-option, so if you plan on rolling multiple rangers for some reason, pick the one you're most excited about.
Asura Ranger. I'll be making it with out-of-proportions items too... Longbow. Huge pets. And you'll see me running around with a greatsword on occasions. I also really like the idea of hiding in places in PvP and raining death from above, and using my wit at a range.

Spoken of pets, will they grow as their level increases, like in GW1? The biggest pets there, combined with an Asura, would probably lead to hilarity in some situations... :P

My first and main will be a human female ranger. My second (depending on how many characters we can create) will probably an Asuran ranger, also female.
I am pretty sure I will pick a Charr ranger (although she will not be my first choice to create), so I chose this option.
I'll probably make all my chars within a day or two of getting the game, but I'll have guardian and engineer as mains and ranger, mesmer, ele, and necro for playing later or with my kid.
Human or Charr for me. Haven't really connected much with the other races so far.
I've connected with all races except human. Humans just feel average to me.
The reason I picked asura for the ranger is mainly because I wanted to pick a race that was unusual for a ranger. Physical races were therefore not a good fit (e.g. norn, charr), and sylvari seemed too common a choice due to their closeness to nature. Asura seems a good fit also if roleplayed from the point of view of an asura trying to understand the nature, and living from his wits and his environment as opposed to gadgets.

While Sylvari seem the most logical choice (since Ranger rely on nature and Sylvari kind of ARE nature), noone seems to have picked them. I would've, but I want to keep them for my Engineer or Elementalist... So it's a Human Ranger, currently, unless the character design screen convinces me otherwise...
Their racial skill Grasping Roots could also be useful for rangers.
Sylvari ranger seems redundant, actually. I expect to see a lot in-game, as common as night elf rangers or druids.

Fair enough, but night elves did use to be the only Druid-race on the Alliance, so that might be a coincidence.
Yeah ok, but the point about rangers still stand.
Also, wtf no night elf warlocks. That would have been my main (until I'd find out warlocks are boring, that is).

God they were boring indeed. At least the Necromancer in GW was executed decently. Those summons were just afwul (and hideous!). I'm afraid I had a main Warlock character, one of the main reasons I quit (didn't want to start over, didn't want to continue and play such a boring character).
I figure a Norn Ranger, shapeshifting with his pet could be cool aswell. I should stop thinking about combinations, or I might actually make a Norn Ranger instead. I'll probably spend all my money on Character slots, so to make all possible combinations of Race/Profession if it continues like this.
Sylvari Ranger or Norn..
I'm still thinking what to pick, the only races I have set are Warrior, Elementalist and Thief.
Leaning towards Sylvari for the moment though.
But that Sylvari might even end up as a Mesmer for all I know.
I just had a mental picture of a sylvari mesmer (thanks Karuro). A sylvari mesmer is kinda like throwing leaves (clones) at your foes, it doesn't sound impressive. I'd rather throw a norn or charr at them, more shock value.

Sylvari for me (I go for the conventional choices.)
Sylvar and Norn feel like the most natural Ranger species, though I imagine them with different pets: Sylvari I associate with the creepy crawly ones (Insects, spiders, lizards, jellyfish, etc.), while Norn I associate with the big mammal predators and birds. (Cats, dogs, bears, wolves, etc.)

Thinking about this quote, I'd actually imagine Sylvari throwing around lots of colorful flower illusions, possibly colored fall leaf illusions. Sylvari would probably be masters of distracting enemies with lots of pretty colors flying around.

I always prefer human! I try to stay alive even in the invented world. That is why i chose human range.

I had a charr ranger during this beta... That one is awesome running beside your pet!

I think I am going to pick char or sylvari for ranger ^^
I belive they are more conectet with nature and the materials for bow and arrow - can't think that an asura would prefer a piece of wood with some sticks against a scientific weapon of an engeneer XD
I like the idea that a char could run beside it's pet, but guess a sylvari would have a special relationship to it (just my opinion ^^)

Mine does ;)
Perfecting a bow takes a lot of crafting. Also, the idea of being able to achieve more with simpler starting components appeals to this asura. There's superiority in being able to do the same using just a bow.

I got a Hobbit hunter in LotRO and I have grown accustomed to this short legged little annoying man, so why not make another one? ;)
Oh yes, almost forgot! Asura is my pick :)

I haven't actually tried ranger in the betas yet. Mainly because I only had a few hours each time...
I think I'll make a charr ranger however. Because something about a big scary cat with a ferocious pet strikes me as amusing :)

ok bad joke coming up: Name your Asura Jerry and the cat-pet Tom.

Actually, I would. But I'm sticking with the Alaris's. Quick, someone else steal that joke.

I am having trouble with this one. I either want a Human Ranger and Charr Thief... Or the opposite, I really cannot decide, both make great sense.

Human ranger. This character shall inherit all from my current GW main character, including name.
But I still can't decide male or female (I've got more than one name I can use…)

That's the reason I'm making a Charr ranger, an Asuran ranger, a Sylvari ranger, a Norn ranger and a human ranger.... In time...

Female, naturally. Females are the best!
I'll have 4 females, 2 males... that's unexpected because I tend to make only females.
But I really like the male asura face with bright centers for my ranger, and male charr is awesome for necro.
Because I only care about pvp, I see no reason whatsoever to pick anything but Asura.

Sylvari female... went back and forth between all the races but I'm trying to spread out across all races so I ended up with Sylvari for my ranger.
Maybe I've always been confused about the meaning of "ranger". I wanted it to be about ranged combat (not magic, that's for range poopies). But all along, it seems to have been about having a pet. After all, if you are out on the range, the first thing is to take care of your pet, then to think about fighting. That's not for me at all. I used to like my "elder widow", but it was just a tool, imo. Being attached to a digital pet is kind of pathetic.
Therefore, I'm probably going to make a Thief first. I really don't give a poop about a pet, and just want to have bow skills...
Ranger for me can be one of many things...
1) The person who takes care of some nature reserve, e.g. keeps its animals etc safe
2) Fights from a range
#1 is more fun, gives the ability to use pets, traps, melee, ranged weapons (natural ones preferably)
#2 is boring, because melee and pets is fun too
Mind you, neither requires pets. It's not a beast master, it's a ranger.

My only pve char in GW1 was a ranger. It really was about bows and fighting from a distance.
Now, I guarantee you that I have more hours on my ranger than you. And I guarantee you, that my ranger time will make you seem like a newbie. Which you are. In fact, I have the audacity to suggest that you don't have ranger obsidian armor.
And since you don't have obsidian armor, you don't care.
Am I right?
And if so, please shut your mouth before you invest more than 4000 hours in your ranger profession and achieve at least basic pvp titles on that char...
EDIT: in other words, stfu. Sorry, gwo person!.
EDIT: my point is Im angry for no reason. I hate for gw2 rangers to be underpowered. I hate it... screw this'
PPPPS:
I have calmed down. You still suck.
Bite me.

Hahah, funny post. I actually "liked" it.
Yeah, well, my first real main (paragon didn't count) and GWAMM was ranger, but then I prefer the ritualist. So perhaps I do not care as much as you. Obsidian, pretty sure dervish got it.
But yeah, I remember asking for a petless option for ranger in GW2, and people were like STFU and otherwise not being nice at me, so I understand your pain. I think melee options are nice, but ranger shouldn't have to bring pet.
Besides, it's really the necro's job to bring along dead pets.
