View Full Version : Untraditional MMORPG stuff I did in GW2

List things you did in GW2 that you don't remember doing in other MMORPGs.

Aside for stuff we already knew, I:
-started an escort quest by reviving the NPC I was supposed to escort
-played tower defense Iron legion storyline, select turrets when you get to pick

I learned about a dynamic event - Queensdale's water source being poisoned - by noticing people in the hamlet feeling sick and a foulness rising from their wells (a fair distance from the source).

While doing a jumping puzzle, I aided someone by dropping a line that granted swiftness to help him with a jump that was giving him trouble. When we fought and cleared the last room, we both got credit and a chest to open. We never formally partied.

I mapped two entire maps 100%. Maybe that's not the most unconventional MMORPG thing in the world, but it's unconventional for me, without a doubt. I NEVER 100% complete stuff, especially not maps!

I really like the fact that you don't have to worry much about people stealing your kill or you stealing others' kills. I can enjoy the battles instead of worrying about drama.

I see stuff happening, and I join in.

Quite a few times, I stayed in areas longer than it needed for the heart or skill point, just because I was helping out people because that's what I do.

Not being able to form a party with folks I want to play with... :p

Erring Ryft

Not everything worked perfectly for me at launch. This is completely inconsistent with every other MMO I have ever played.

(totally understand your frustration though, RC, even if it's not been happening that way for me).

Alaris
27-08-2012, 03:01
That not everything works at launch, I expected. That everything worked at launch for others, I have a hard time believing.

I saw a ghost minion, as in, the minion of a ghost necromancer... that was interesting.

One thing that I found that doesn't happen in MMORPGs:

I got knocked off a cliff by a bunny and fell to my death.

I'm healing random people in fights, happy that I don't actually waste precious XP-gathering time doing this.

Also, levelling up in a lower-level area, by killing stuff 5 levels below me, who are still giving me a challenge.

I kept going back and forth between "high" end (for my level, that is) and "low" end content. And I got nice drops and XP all the way! Also, simply jumping into a fight simply because it was a fight...

sorudo
27-08-2012, 10:58
normally i just focus on leveling, now i focused simply on playing the game.
did some really nice jumping puzzles, helped ppl getting trough them and even did one two times because it's such a fun one. (the pirate one in LA)
played events without searching my butt of finding the quest giver (what a relieve), explored places to enjoy the view, helped out players who were downed, got helped when downed (>_<) and played the game without waiting for a queue.

I find that the paradigm that 'Morrowind' promotes applies to GW2 a lot more...

MORROWIND is filled with things for you to do…hundreds and hundreds of things. During
your efforts to complete the main quest or rise to power in a faction, don’t forget to
leave the beaten path now and then to see what’s over the next ridge. Or, talk to people
you meet to see what problems or assistance they may reveal to you. It is in these
moments, and thousands of others like them, that you will forget the real world—
sometimes for much longer than you intended—and lose yourself in ours. Perhaps it’ll
be spent searching for a lost artifact that is rumored to be hidden in a tomb. Maybe
you’ll choose a side in a war between rival guilds.

No matter what your preference, there’s no right or wrong way to play MORROWIND.

I prefer my own creed (stolen from another game, naturally, I'm not that inventive!)

Nothing is required, Everything is permitted.

I sat in lazyness and watched other doing an event I didn't want to do, enjoying the surrondings and the music.

I know right? It's the first game I plan to play to completion. At least in PvE. I'm going for 100% of Tyria this time.

Agreed!

it is account-wide, right? So if my Warrior maps something, my Ranger doesn't have to.

Hmm, I think that's the only thing that's not account-wide... I would have to check at home though.

I would think not, so you can get the completion reward on each character. Also not sure, though.

Starting an event solo with a greatsword and burning down enemies one at a time. Then, as more players showed up and the enemies starting coming in large groups, switching over to a more supportive build simply by switching weapons (to my staff).

And doing it several times in the same combat.

Well, yeah, you CAN complete the areas each time for rewards, but I THINK the achievement is account-wide. Not sure, though.

Role swapping mid-combat has to be the biggest for me. My elementalist started with lots of AoE damage, then switched over to support a bit as people were getting overwhelmed, then back to AoE. Then a champion showed up and elementalist switched to single target/control. I didn't even swap weapons for this, just attunements.

I'd also mention "rushing in to an event where players are downed and then they all decide that maybe it's better off not to fight that bandit veteran, leaving me to face him alone and get my head stomped in," but... that's pretty typical for lots of games. Memorable since it was my first character death. *sigh*

(side note, second (and only other) death I've experienced in the game so far was me gawking at the sights in Rata Sum, and my character walked off the edge of a platform. I'm smrt)

Ok, just checked. Map completion is character based, not account based. My ranger has done some things so every item has a 1+. My Charr did the starting bit and went into town and his is mostly at 0.

That's what I thought.

I don't know if I will have patience to 100% map every area with a single character, but across all of them, maybe. I don't even knowhow many areas there are yet or what's in them and that is SO exciting to me. It's like when I first got into EQ or they would release a new expansion. "Back in those days," you didn't know EVERYTHING about a game before or just after it came out.

- I moved while casting
- I used more than 2 skills in any given hour of playtime, be it lvl1 or lvl 10 (or lvl 60 in vanilla WoW)
- I went into melee as a caster
- I actually feel part of a story, making me turn off radio to turn on the sound of the game
- I played with a friend who started the game 10 minutes before me and because of that was a level ahead
- I didn't care about my level in the slightest, I just play to enjoy the game
- I felt excited for unpacking my big CE box. Damn it it's big.

EDIT and a big one:
- I see someone mining and I happily go mine with him instead of being annoyed

Some new ones from last night:

- finding and using weapons in the environment (bottles, boards, etc.) just because I can.
- not worrying get about xp because in I'm an area that's "too low for me".
- The swamp event - wow!

RD
28-08-2012, 16:14
I want to do that swamp event so bad, but it's always "The swamp is dormant" or whatever.

Here's something nontraditional: I can log in for 10 minutes and make some progress and enjoy myself.

A few times, I joined an event that I did before, just because I really liked it the first time. The one where I have to defend the charr junkyard, I always redo it if it triggers when I am near. It's awesome.

I also circle strafed in melee, it actually works. I am a lot more mobile in combat now, and as a result surviving is easier.

I crafted stuff that I am using. Lots of 8-slot bags.

Cooking lvl 120 on a lvl 25 char...
I guess soon my asura will be Sumo size, itf it goes on like this.

The exp is also very nice. Yesterday i found a new recipe close to my lvl, which on cooking first time gave me 3K exp.

How is that for untraditionally awesomness ?

Whats not so nice: Just got kicked out of the game by a forced update and can't log in anymore...

I was doing the long underwater puzzle thing when it updated. Logged back in, and I was continuing where I left off. Nice.

I started the vigil etc storyline. I'm getting the impression that the story will differ significantly across races. I was expecting the stories to converge by about now, but it seems not to be the case as I am talking to charrs exclusively during the two first storyline quests I did for the vigil etc.

I also love the way the hearts work. They say "hey, you can this, or this, or that." if I hate doing this and like doing that, I can just ignore one and does more of the other and it works just fine.

Leveling by doing things you actually find fun - who'd of thunk it? :)

Alaris
28-08-2012, 17:25
Level 25. Only twice I felt forced to do something I didn't really enjoy in order to get a heart. One was a minigame where I had to catch a specific bug and feed it to a specific cow, it was just boring and I didn't see an obvious way to get the heart by doing something else. But at least it was unique gameplay.

The other had me work by cutting wood etc, and for some reason there were no foes around which I would have preferred doing (because I already cut enough wood when gathering for crafting).

I have completed 2 full maps. I notice that the vistas and points of interest are getting more and more complex. One had a long jumping puzzle (with some ghosts to boot) that I finally pulled off, but I was rewarded with a skill point and a vista. Also, it was actually pretty fun.

Several of these are in other MMO's. A big one I agree on this list is the not caring about my level. In most other games I'm constantly having to avoid things so I don't end up too overleveled.

And the mining one too. :)

I joined in an assault on a tower, after which I lead our group to Stonemist Keep. We found the gates open and a small force of green defenders and red invaders fighting to the last man. We, as blue invaders, killed the ones who survived and easily took the keep.

I also lead the charge off off a keep to destroy catapults. The rest of the team saw my heroic jumping and followed me, after which we pushed back the enemies. Then they wooped our butts.

I never did that in another MMORPG.

WAR had something (sort of) similar to WvWvW. But the addition of a third faction makes it VERY different. And stuff like this:

I usually forget about my level, only to realize I have 2-3 trait points waiting for me. The only time I ever check is to see whether I can advance story or move to a particular area, apart from that level doesn't mean anything in this game.

Trait points also don't make nearly the difference they do in other games. Maybe in bulk but not point per point.

Play a bit in the Queensdale area. Usually the swamp boss is announced in map chat. It takes several long minutes to take him down so you have plenty of time to get there. I usually go to queensdale anyways to finish up daily achievements so you will find the boss sooner rather than later. Already did him 3 times since launch.
