All pics are 1920x1080. The shot of EoTN might make for a decent wallpaper.
GW needs better terrain textures really badly. That + the finicky constrictive camera ruins some of the shots (like the fifth. Hi shapeless blob of color to the left!)

I am such a carebear.

I'm getting into the expansion stuff for the first time, and it's completely blowing me away. This is from two-year old content, no less. I can't wait to check out the stuff from the new expansion.

So. Lore, as the title hints to. Something I never understood in Guild Wars, and quite frankly, I find it boring, wholly uninteresting, and completely forgettable. But walking into Shattrath City for the first time, you're sent to the very middle of the city to talk to a naaru there. A mage then steps in and tells you not to trifle it with your petty questions, that it's probably the most powerful being you may ever come face to face with, and then he summons a voidwalker to show you around the city.

So as you're following around this tour guide, he's /whispering you a ton of backstory on the city, and to be quite honest, I was completely riveted.. it was sort of like a gw Kurzick/Luxon thing, only in the end they all don't join hands and hug trees. If you align yourself with one group, the other group WILL hate you, and attack you if you venture into their section of town.

Shattrath was once the draenei capital of this world. Its name means "dwelling of light." When the Burning Legion turned the orcs against the draenei, the fiercest battle was fought here. The draenei fought tooth and nail, but in the end the city fell. The city was left in ruins and darkness... until the Sha'tar arrived. The Sha'tar, or "born from light" are the naaru that came to Outland to fight the demons of the Burning Legion. They were drawn to the ruins of Shattrath City where a small remnant of the draenei priesthood conducted its rites inside a ruined temple on this very spot.

The priesthood, known as the Aldor, quickly regained its strength as word spread that the naaru had returned and reconstruction soon began. The ruined temple is now used as an infirmary for injured refugees. It wouldn't be long, however, before the city came under attack once again. This time, the attack came from Illidan's armies. A large regiment of blood elves had been sent by Illidan's ally, Kael'thas Sunstrider, to lay waste to the city. As the regiment of blood elves crossed this very bridge, the Aldor's exarchs and vindicators lined up to defend the Terrace of Light. But then the unexpected happened. The blood elves laid down their weapons in front of the city's defenders; their leader, a blood elf elder known as Voren'thal, stormed into the Terrace of Light and demanded to speak to A'dal. As the naaru approached him, Voren'thal kneeled before him and uttered the following words: "I've seen you in a vision, naaru. My race's only hope for survival lies with you. My followers and I are here to serve you."

The defection of Voren'thal and his followers was the largest loss ever incurred by Kael's forces. And these weren't just any blood elves. Many of the best and brightest amongst Kael's scholars and magisters had been swayed by Voren'thal's influence. The naaru accepted the defectors, who would become known as the Scryers; their dwelling lies in the platform above. Only those initiated with the Scryers are allowed there.

The Aldor are followers of the Light and forgiveness and redemption are values they understand. However, they found hard to forget the deeds of the blood elves while under Kaell's command. Many of the priesthood had been slain by the same magisters who now vowed to serve the naaru. They were not happy to share the city with their former enemies. The Aldor's most holy temple and its surrounding dwellings lie on the terrace above. As a holy site, only the initiated are welcome inside.

The attacks against Shattrath continued, but the city did not fall, as you can see. On the contrary, the naaru known as Xi'ri led a successful incursion into Shadowmoon Valley - Illidan's doorstep. There he continues to wage war on Illidan with the assistance of the Aldor and the Scryers. The two factions have not given up on their old feuds, though. Such is their animosity that they vie for the honor of being sent to assist the naaru there. Each day, that decision is made here by A'dal. The armies gather here to receive A'dal's blessing before heading to Shadowmoon. Khadgar should be ready to see you again. Just remember that to serve the Sha'tar you will most likely have to ally with the Aldor or the Scryers. And seeking the favor of one group will cause the others' dislike.

Good luck stranger, and welcome to Shattrath City.

I allied with the Aldor, obviously. Hell with the elves.

------------------

So my game time runs out tomorrow, at around 11am.
I'll be buying more.

It's quite frankly the best 15 dollars I can spend in a month for the money/fun ratio. Weeknights after work (when I have it) I can talk to my RL friends and game with them. The game itself is better than Guild Wars in every way except two: No map travel (though that's not a huge issue as the hearthstone is getting a 30 minute cooldown instead of 1hr next patch, as well as speed buffs/mounts being available. Once you get a few flightpaths it's a non-issue, although the 1 to 5 minute flight seems pointless. I'm pushing for a double-priced instant point-to-point travel option.) The other downside is very very occasionally there'll be a quest which leads you to an area where some douchebag death knight is there who doesn't want to party with you, and is killing a lot of the monsters you need. But usually the planets have to be aligned for that to happen, as respawn rates are high, and people on my server are mature and helpful - far more mature than any pug I've personally ever come across in gw.

Of course I don't need to go on about the perks of a game where bandwidth is tossed about far more freely due to the income paying for server costs and such. Auction houses, mail systems with instant char-to-char transfers, gargantuan inventory and storage, the ability to chat directly to GMs, achievements, a test server for upcoming patches, large content updates every few months (kind of like Sorrow's Furnace, only triple the size and far more often), and freedom of movement. It's not that gw is bad, per se, it's that it's so hard to go back because it feels so goddamn primitive and archaic.

Something else that's neat, there's pve that people use ventrilo for! Not for fun. FOR PLANNING. Seriously. PvE that needs vent coordination to be successful. Like.. what? My brain.. hard to comprehend. Damn. But watching them do a dungeon at Nessa's last lan party was really, really impressive. It was like they were planning strategy in a pvp match, only.. it was pve. This is mostly because instead of gw's "LOL MORE DAMAGE = MORE DIFFICULT" philosophy, bosses all have unique environmental effects, skills, counters, and quirks. For example the Malygos boss fight, towards the end the boss dragon breaks the platform your guild is standing on, but the Red Dragonflight (the good dragons) fly in from the sides to catch you, and you finish the fight with an aerial dogfight on the back of these friggin things. HELL YES.

So yeah. I'll be playing it more.

And no, you still can't have my stuff, because I'll be using it if GW2 manages to be as good as Warcraft. But until then I'll be playing a pretty great facsimile of Anet's next-gen game today, instead of next year.
---------------------------------

And yes, I still say the game looks great, although I'll concede that screenshots don't do it justice. It has more "life" to it than any other game I can think of offhand, which is why I idiotically mentioned earlier that I wished I could take "pictures that move" earlier today. Yeah. (Kind of like this newfangled technology called video I suppose?)

I never thought I'd say this, but the most fun that I've ever had playing pve was last night, while questing in World of Warcraft.

There, I said it.

After three+ years of bashing on WoW, my RL friends managed to somehow not disown me, and actually got me to play a bit of it. And what do you know, I was actually blown away, both at how fun it was, and at how closed-minded and ignorant I'd been over a freakin' computer game.

So what was so special about last night? I finally got to experience some of the content from Wrath of the Lich King. And while Classic WoW is okay, with it's talent trees, unique quests, and humor, there's been years and two expansions since that was put out, and this latest one shows why WoW dominates pve.

It started off innocently enough, I figured I'd make a Death Knight, the new "hero" class, and find out what all this hubbub was about. And I wanted to make a character I wouldn't take seriously, something I could laugh at while killing a half hour or so.

And what better than a absolutely creepy looking female Gnome?

**Now before I continue, I'd like to apologize for the lowres screenshots. As much as I loathe people taking screenshots in low quality, I didn't want to have to play the game at 5 fps. If only Staples restocks their awesome HP laptop sometime soon, and I manage to find someway to actually, you know, buy it. Nevertheless, the texture work on high is equal or better than anything found in Guild Wars, but if you insist on carrying on like I was and not being able to accept differing art styles, then you have my sympathy.**

Carrying on then! Yes! A female gnome!

Unfortunately, I didn't actually wind up calling it "LOLWUT". Created, it came out like this:

Entering the game, you're treated to a fly-through cinematic, showing the Light's Hope Chapel, and the necropolis known as Acherus: The Ebon Hold:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw9aCv_4e9M

When you gain control of your character, you're standing behind the Lich King himself, your first quest giver. Note how tiny my gnome is.

After forging your runeblade, you're sent to the battlelines, to destroy the villagers in Havenshire. At the end of each quest you're given superior quality items (golds in gw), and extra talent points to get you up to where a level 55 should be. One of the first quests requires you to steal a horse from the stables:

After returning with the horse, you're sent into the realm of shadows (which is just overlaid on the area you're in) to seek out and kill a "Dark Horse Rider." You walk back into the town, now devoid of citizens and see several riders around. After taking one out, you hop onto his horse and steal it as your own. After that point you're able to summon a Deathcharger mount whenever you want.

After entering the mine and turning a few miners into ghouls by using a ground-targeted aoe item given to you, you're then given the task of killing ...100 Scarlet Defenders. But wait!! "100 defenders?! LOL WOW IS SO GRINDY!" you say? And yes, I agreed, until I read the rest of the quest. They have you sneak down to the beaches by hopping in an "inconspicuous mine cart":

Which then gives you access to... MASSIVE CANNONS OF DEATH!

After massacring the defenders on the beach in about 30 seconds, you hitch a ride on a scourge griffon to safety. After talking to the Lich King again, you take the teleport down to the village again.. only to find that the world has been changed since you left. The happy-looking village you walked through earlier is now crawling with Scourge, the buildings are on fire, and your base has been moved forward. Your higher ups then give you some "persuaders" (which basically look like redhot pokers you dual-wield,) and you go into the main town to find out the purpose of the "Crimson Dawn." I should note that any citizens you encounter scream and tremble in fear - sometimes literally - they'll get the "Fear" effect put on them and run around uncontrollably. This is amusing when you go to kill the Mayor of the town and run into a pack of 20 or 30 citizens outside of the town hall, screaming at the Mayor for letting the Scourge take over, and how their family's been killed, and so forth. One of the higher-up Death Knights also has you enter a building to kill some prisoners they found, and as it turns out the prisoner is of your own race - and what's worse is they recognize you, and mention how you used to stand for all that was noble and good. As the high Death Knight yells at you for taking so long, the captured gnome urges you to finish him off, lest you both suffer. And so.. you do.

After that grim encounter, you go back and are then tasked with the interception of a messenger to find out about this "Crimson Dawn" stuff. And to that? Well, you hide behind a cardboard tree of course.

After the obvious outcome of that meetup, you're then transformed to look like the Scarlet Courier you just killed, and walk down to the beach to deliver the message and make sure it seems like everything is going to plan.

And while they're all thinking everything's going to be okay, you hop on a giant frost wurm and go for a massacre:

Finally the Lich King decides it's time to take the fight to the holy ground of Light's Hope Chapel. You and Highlord Darion Morgraine get ready for battle, as you stand next to him he raises up a few hundred Scourge all around you to join the fight. Inwards you charge, 10000 Scourge vs 300 Defenders of the Light.

This is probably the most fun of the entire thing, and I completely forgot to take screenshots of it because I was having so much fun. It's like an honest-to-god war - You get a buff by the Highlord which increases your regen, damage, and so forth, and you just start picking off as many Defenders as you can. Unfortunately, fighting on holy ground you're no match for the paladin Highlord Tirion Fordring.

Morgaine orders the Scourge to stand down, and then, defeated, Darion's father's ghost appears, reminding him of who he used to be before he was turned into a death knight. (All of this is fully voiced-over by the way.) A flashback begins to play showing Darion as a child, saying how he can't wait to fight against the Scourge, and wants to wield his father's Ashbringer, a weapon made from pure Light (Light as in a manifestation of the force of "good" in Warcraft, rather than light as in sun).

You may notice the sword on his back is in fact the Ashbringer.. corrupted, as Darion was. The paladin then informs Darion that him and the other death knights were sent here to die by the Lich King's command. Darion, naturally, refuses to believe his king would knowingly order the death of his troops. Well luckily, the lich king himself shows up, and admits it. "Their lives are meaningless.." but he had suceeded in bringing the paladin Fordring out of hiding. As the Lich King makes his move, Darion throws Fordring the Ashbringer - in Fordring's hands it becomes pure once more, and the paladin then uses it to attack the lich king:

Realizing Arthas has no chance against the Ashbringer on holy ground, he teleports out, leaving Darion and the rest of the death knights to vow revenge against him for his treachery. The quest ends with the remaining death knights forming an alliance with the paladin, and becoming renegade death knights - Knights of the Ebon Blade.

Back at the changed necropolis, you fight off the last of Arthas's scourge, and begin your quest for revenge.
Here's my gnome at the end of the quest line, after turning good:

(My feet are glowing because in Acherus you get a buff that makes you run 75% faster.)

And a full-screen shot without the helm for laughs:

..Actually this probably won't concern or interest you at all, that was just a clever ruse to get you to click.

Well, it worked.

So anyway, I wonder what people would like to read about in gw blogs.. Surely I'm not going to bore you to death with details on my pve endeavors, mostly because I don't pve often, and when I do it's definitely not for titles. Sometimes I'm shocked that I actually bothered to get 6 max titles on my warrior, let alone that I actually went through with getting Tyrian Vanquisher for matching title/name amusement.

I could talk about my other gaming exploits, but it's mostly been a case of 'play an FPS for 5 or 10 minutes until it crashes.' Followed by 'go back to Photoshop and mess about until it crashes, scrapping all your work which you so conveniently forgot to save.'

Ah yes, the joys of a self-built computer that's coming up on five years of age, suffering with the copy of Windows Vista I foolishly tossed on it. You should hear the cpu fan on it, it's like a small vacuum cleaner.

Which brings us to Macs. This Christmas (or perhaps shortly after, as I'll touch on later), I'll be getting one, and it'll be my primary gaming machine. I realize this limits my gaming potential if I want to stay in OSX, but without having to reboot to XP you can run gw and Steam just fine with a little Crossover Games magic. Then we have the Mac-client-available Diablo 3, so no worries about that game not being able to suck me in for years like it's predecessor. And since I don't really care about other games at the moment (and can boot to xp as a last resort anyway), the OS shouldn't be an issue.

Plus I'll be able to use Final Cut, Logic Pro, and Photoshop CS4 with all its fancy workspace effects. Along with the inherent awesomeness of the OSX UI, that's one big "hell yes."

If only they'd upgrade their iMacs before Christmas.. Instead I have to wait till January 5th-9th where there's the potential that they might be updated, as they haven't been in a year or so. They may update the Mac Mini too, which if it includes a decent video card would save me a bit of money, as I already have a perfectly fine 20 inch flatscreen. (Of course the iMac would come with a 24 inch, with built in webcam and mic..)

So until then I'll be "playing" Guild Wars on low settings, while getting ~15 fps. And by playing I mean, it'll run, and I'll sit in town while talking to people. Because I can't do much of anything else except the aforementioned pveing. And if there's anything more boring than rolling through some mission it's having to do so at 15fps with no eyecandy to speak of.

If you've made it this far, here's a bonus. Suggest decent skills for the monk skill of the week articles. I need to get my monk a new set of armor or something. Give it some love and reassurance I'll play it again when I'm able to prot before damage lands rather than the comp freezing and having to watch my teammates helplessly die. <_<
