After more then 8 months of playing this game (thx Anet, bro bro) I'm still astonished that I keep finding a large number of people that completely dismiss certain gameplay mechanics by using the lame argument of "but they're just bonuses!" when talking about creating builds.

Because of that (and mainly because I want to prove how stupid this argument is) I've decided to create a mini-series of posts called Why they aren't "just bonuses" (lame title, get over it).

For starters, I'll be talking about combo fields (yes, yes, I'll get down to traits and runes eventually, don't worry).

So, what is exactly a combo field?

You can think of a combo field as an environment change in a certain area caused by a certain skill. These combo fields by themselves don't do anything, only when interacted with "combo finishers" special effects can happen. For example, let's take a look at a very common skill, Lava Font:

Notice the red selection box, which highlights the combo field generated by this skill. What this means is that, during the time Lava Font is in effect (4 seconds) the area affected by it will be imbued with Fire properties (combo field: Fire). If a combo finisher is used inside the AoE of Lava Font while the skill is active an effect will happen. Once again, let's take a look at another skill, Arcane Wave:

Notice the red selection box again. If Arcane Wave is used while inside Lava Font it will cause a combo effect, in this case everyone around you, including yourself, will receive 3 stacks of Might. This may not seem a lot, but imagine a team of 5 players that coordinate themselves to use one Blast finisher each inside a Lava Font. That's 15 stacks of Might for everyone in the team.

Taking an extreme example, let's look at WvW. Imagine you're the only Staff Elementalist in the whole zerg (like, for example, me :undecided:) and the commander asks you to place a Fire field near the zerg (yo Chips, don't mess the fields ). If everyone in the zerg then starts using Blast finishers inside it, what ends up happening is that the entire zerg now has 25 stacks of Might. We're talking about a single person (elementalist) giving 25 stacks of Might to more then 20 people. If you use a Blast finisher while inside a Water field (for example, Healing Rain) everyone around you get's healed for 1350+ HP. With enough Blast finishers, you quickly fully heal your entire zerg in a few seconds. Another very important combo is using Blast finishers while inside a Lightning field (for example Static Field) to give upwards of 1 minute of Swiftness to the entire zerg. Good use of combo fields can decide the winner of a battle, especially when out-numbered.

However, there's no need to use extreme examples to prove how important this game mechanic is. It's perfectly possible to combo by yourself given the right build. Let's take a look at the skills of this build. Pay particular atention to Symbol of Protection and Mighty Blow:

Notice the small recharge of each of these skills (one is a Chain skill, the other has a 5 second recharge). If you use Mighty Blow after using Symbol of Protection, you'll give everyone around you Retaliation for 3 seconds. That's a 60% uptime of retaliation for everyone around you. That's kinda of a big deal.

Now that you know how combo fields work and how important they can be when taking a build into consideration (a build with combo fields/finishers brings a lot more utility to the team) here's the table that explains all the possible combinations, taken directly from the wiki (because I can't be bothered to make a special table, deal with it!):

----------------------------------

To end this first part of "Why they aren't just bonuses", don't dismiss combo fields as unimportant. They aren't obvious and the game may not do a good job explaining them, but they do provide very important decisions of when you should be using a certain skill in whatever the situation you currently are and considerably raise the skill cap of all the professions.

They aren't just bonuses.

Some of you might be trying to get the crabtoss achievements, and might find it a bit frustrating. It took me a bit of practice, but I figured out some things that might help you top the scoreboard. Once you get the hang of it, it's quite fun.

First of all, get a weapon.

If you haven't got the crab:

Plank, has a good number 1 skill. Select the crab carrier and within medium range you'll jump on top of him and take his crab. Very handy to leap forward quickly.
Fishingrod, arguebly the best weapon if you don't have the crab. Use the number 1 skill to grab the crab right out of peoples hands from quite a distance.
Karka Eggs, are a bit tricky to aim, but they immoblize someone.

When you DO have the crab:

Conge, the final fear skill makes this the best weapon by far for keeping opponents out of your hair. It combines well with the run skill, so alternate between the two. Use the fear attack to bridge the gap between cooldowns.
Bottle, drink this to refill health. A side effect of having the crab, is constantly having young karka licking at your heels. So eventually you run out of health. This will keep you up and running a bit longer.

Strategy

First of all, if you see the crab on the floor, let someone else take it. Target that player, stand close to him, and during his pickup animation use skill number 1. This eliminates at least one player that would otherwise instantly take the crab from you.

As soon as you have the crab, face the other side of the arena and hold your run skill. Keeping it pressed allows you to run much further, so go the full distance. You may also want to dodge immediately as you grab the crab, so enemy attacks miss.

If there are giant karka around, run through them with your run skill. The run skill renders you invincible, and most likely this will provoke them, causing them to roll over the people that are chasing you. Extra points if it works.

If the run skill is on recharge, and players are closing in on you, dodge roll suddenly in a completely different direction. You can even dodge roll in their direction, which is the last thing they'd expect. If you time it right, they'll miss their attack, and the crab wil still be yours. Keep them busy long enough till your run skill is recharged, and immediately use it.

If you think you won't be able to hold on to the crab much longer, pass it to another player. Just target a player, and use the pass skill. In the chaos, you may be able to quickly snatch it back while your run skill is recharging.

When baby karka try to latch on to you, dodge as they leap, to prevent them from slowing you down. If baby karka do hit, and are attached to your body, dodge roll to get rid of them.

Apart from the steal skill, and the run skill, the other skills aren't very useful. The rock has to be picked up first, and it only dazes opponents. This stops them from using the run skill for a few seconds, but the range is poor, and it misses easily. The punch skill also isn't that good. Just steal the crab and run for it.

If giant karka come rolling, dodge roll through them, or to the side. If you succesfully roll through them, you'll easily lose any chasing players.

Don't forget to close the final scoreboard, and open that reward chest in the middle of the arena.

If you are trying to get that crabtacular achievement, you may get lucky in some arenas, where other players will help each other get that achievement. It is hard to find such none competitive matches, but they do exist. Otherwise, just hide behind giant karka a lot, and hope for the best. All it takes is for you to hold the crab, while everyone except you, gets flattened by a rolling karka. I got it through dumb luck.

Good luck, and have fun

New content is live. Since I don't have time to play this week, post about all the fun stuff you find here. Or complaints that make me feel better about not being able to play work too. ;-)

Interestingly, everyone's favorite dungeon and ranger loving developer, Robert Hrouda had a few interesting things to say about the new live story content (he was one of the team working on this: https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/foru...-F-was/2018465

Hey folks,

The Southsun Shore stuff will not be like the previous Flame and Frost stuff in regards to how time-spanning it was. We're a separate team than that one, and we have been working on this content while you all were playing F&F content.
Our story will last a month and then be over with, and as a result is more condensed. We've been listening to the feedback on F&F, and tried our hardest to adjust where possible. So our temporary content will last just the month, but we are making some permanent changes to the island that will persist after the living story bit is over.

Someone expressed doubts about how this would all work out, so Robert added a little more detail:

Nah, it's cool. No disrespect for stating your opinion about things. I don't want to spoil things, but I have been working near exclusively on the content that is going to be a more permanent fixture of the island. It is significantly more than NPCs and some spawns. When a precedent has been established, it's okay to be skeptical/doubtful, and it's okay to voice those things. I do hope you'll enjoy the permanent content I've been working on, and it changes your opinion

Hope it's fun.

let me say before hand that this is not a thread about if the ranger should be petless or not, it's a thread on what the best way is to fill the gab if you're able to hide the pet.

now that's out of the way, let's discuss options.
when you would hide or dissable a pet you are losing something, there is a gap that makes the ranger weaker then with a pet.
the reason ppl want to hide the pet is because they simply don't want to deal with a pet, you could argue that ppl should then take a warrior but that's more an excuse to push away the true issue at hand.

i personally think that the critical chance should increase and the attack speed with bows should be X% faster, i could be way off but that's how i would like to see it.

so how do you think the gap should be filled?

I have, so far, managed to get 4 characters to level 80, one has 100% mapping done too. Necromancer, Warrior, Mesmer and Thief.

I feel like I play the necro and warrior and thief ok in PVE (which is not saying much), but my limited time was mostly spent on trying to get characters to 80 rather than learning their mechanics. I figured I could learn how to play them once they were 80, but I keep moving on to other characters.

I'm working on an Ele now and having fun with that. I was thinking I might try to get her to 30 the way I usually do and then do WvW to get her to 80 as a way to force me to learn the class mechanics better. I also want to do more dungeons stuff with my warrior since I haven't done dungeons much up to now.

I'm curious though, about how many lvl 80s everyone else has and how adept they feel at playing them and in what context (PVE, Dungeons, WvW, sPVP)?
