Well the I-Pod can be used as a portable harddrive, not just as an mp3 player. I have about 11 gigs of mp3s on my computer right now, and I'm sure I could get a lot more if I had that much space available. On top of that, I can store other files, such as movies or games on it for backup or temporarily, like when going over to a friend's house. Heh, I can keep images of the D2 disks on there so I can play whereever and whenever I want to.

The battery supposedly lasts for 12-13 hours at a time, with a 2 hour charge for the whole thing.

It also has all those little features like that of a cell phone, like a calendar, games, text notes, etc.

Currently, I'm using a Creative RioVolt CD player that can play MP3s (while on a CD). It still works, but it consumes batteries too quickly and is as bulky as a normal CD player, which is too big to wear comfortably.

I lent my mini disc player to someone with a pair of high quality rechargeable batteries that came with it. I guess the batteries went dead when they had it and they replaced them with some new one, unknown to them that the other ones were rechargeable. I never told them what they had done though. The other batteries were a little screwed up anyways since I didn't recharge them before their first use.

I got an iPod mini for christmas this year, and I'm very happy with it. You're type should probably go for a bigger one, but personally I have no need, as I dont even like 1000 songs (though curiously my iTunes library has 1300). But yeah, i too have only had good experiences, and frankly I'd argue iPods are the best in the market.

So why not buy a USB HD for 50-70 bucks and save yourself the couple hundred dollars? As for images and such. I just burn them to dvd. 50 cents a disc.

Don't I-Pod minis have the same amount of space as a regular one? And last I checked, they cost just about the same as regular ones. They're just too small in size for me.

As for burning to DVDs, I'll need to buy a DVD-RW drive for an extra $70-100 anyways.

Hmm...according to the Apple webbie, it's 4/6GB for Minis and 20GB for vanilla iPods...and the Mini has a longer battery life. Huh, figure that one out...

While DVD drives are an extra cost, it's only a matter time before game publishers convert to DVDs instead of multiple CDs. Though it may be some time before that happens, helps to be futureproof.

On a somewhat related note, what's everyone's favourite music genre? Electronica(especially the vocal variety) here.

*We are gonna make the druids very jealous....1 day and already 3 pages o.o*

The reason someone would go for an IPod is if they want to use it when they are not around a computer. it does make any other form of music handling pretty obsolete in that area. but yah it can be expensive. i would just go with what i think i can stick with. if you have a large collection of music you may need the larger IPOD in the future...so you would need to take that into account.
Last i looked the mini was a bit smaller but the costs were rather similar.

anyways.. as for music im a rock person.
honestly, ive never heard of electronica.

I'd still recommend you at least look at the Zen, your only missing out on the calender and games i think with it and it saves you about £70 (thats what? $140??) it also couples up as a portable hard drive its jsut cheaper.
I'd buy an i-pod myself if it wasn't for 1) the high cost and 2) the low battery life, it averages about 8hours (compared to the Zen's 24hour life) and there's also supposodly a bug in some of them that after 18months the software thinks the things out of power after 1 hour. Still not sure bout that one though.
