There was a similar problem that had happened with my DSL, but that was because of my phone line. We had our phone line fixed already.
It might be the same problem except for the fact I pointed out that only my computer suffers from this problem and not my dad or mom's computer who is also connected to the internet.
But I appreciate people's input on this.

I havn't seen it mentioned yet so I thought I would throw it out. It sounds like you might have a faulty network card/chip. I have had some issues with so of the no name ethernet card/chip makers where they will drop the connection and then re-establish in less than a second. It's like the card just shuts down for a spit second. Replacing the card with a higher quality one has always solved the problem.
I have had several SMC branded cards that have done this to me.

Hey Martian,
How you been? Thanks for the suggestion, I've just realized I forgot this detail in my main post. I had changed motherboards which in consequence had a different ethernet card. I've had this disconnection problem with both ethernet cards, it might be bad luck that both cards are faulty, but I don't know. My ethernet card is SMC branded as well, I guess I'll check it out once I change to a wireless router.
I have just purchased a new harddrive, I started installing Windows yesterday, I hope I can finish all the core stuff (including Guild Wars :)) by tonight and see wether the connection issue has been solved.

Hey Kazama, I couldn't help but notice you are on sympatico (work with it everyday :D. Anyways all I have to say is it USUALLY is a problem with the router.. are you going with the new wireless modem or just a wireless router?
If it's the former make sure you have it within the recommended distance from the modem and I'd be willing to bet that your problems will be solved. However if it's the wireless router you still may get this resolved. One thing to note, you are likley to need new wireless ethernet cards if you don't have them already so bear that in mind.
Also be weary of wireless net theft... there was a pretty nasty case in Ontario where someone was stealing the wireless signal and looking at kid-p0rn (he was in a van parked on the road beside the house)... the subscriber nearly got jail time for looking at it :(... just make sure that you protect yourself 'k?
BTW I'm assuming you are in Canada as I don't think Sympatico is in the US so GOGO Canada. :happy34:

Hey Parker,
Thanks for the tip. When we switched back to Sympatico, they gave us the usual modem + the wireless router. I intend to use that. Yeah I purchased 2 wireless ethernet cards but I am a bit reluctant to switch to wireless because of the reasons you've mentionned but mainly because my connection used to work fine, I don't know what really caused it. I really hope it was software oriented since now that I have a clean harddrive, I can get back into Guild Wars.
But if I do go with the wireless router, I'll be sure to read up on these protection and stuff, most of my friends now use their laptop, thus wireless internet, we were surprised how many connections were left 'open'ed.
What do you do exactly at Sympatico, Tech Support? Yes I do live in Canada, power to us!

Have you tried switching your computer for one of your parent's to test whether it is the physical connection to where you have your computer plugged in?
I thought of doing that, but the problem is that these disconnections are random, so I would have to be playing Guild Wars there for an undetermined amount of time. Which is not really possible. Still, I am not sure if that would be the problem since I've had this setup for about 3 years and the disconnections have only started for 3-4 months or so. Actually it used to happen a lot less frequent if we look back a year or two.
I just recently formatted, my video card woes are solved! I can even record with Fraps without losing much FPS. I can play HL2 and CS:S without having a blue screen. Yes, everything is going great......... Until I dropped when we were on a good streak of tomb matches. I've been tombing pretty much all afternoon and it was ok. But once the first drop came about, I would drop after 1-2 matches if I rejoined. So I guess it's safe to say the problem was not software wise.
I am still thinking wires though that doesn't make much sense... or does it? Router is perhaps defective now? Funny how the other comp that's connected to the router is still fine though. I really don't feel like setting up the wireless router if I don't know 100% it would solve the problem. I might actually just figure out how to set up my computer with the router and modem, let everyone else in the house suffer from the evil disconnection!
Do you the technical forum could help me? Would it be considered spam if I fowarded them to the start of this conversation?

Heh actually I'm in sales for the phone company Aliant (partnered with Bell)... I tend to be alot more techie than most of the employees so I pick up alot of info from the guys in Tech Support.
I just know from expirence that if you are having problems with your connection it tends to be the router network. Try connecting just your PC to the modem and see how that runs. Also they have just came out with a new wireless modem (not modem + wireless router) that they are testing, it seems to be working great and no need for a router at all :D . Might be worthwile checking that out if Bell's offering it yet (AFAIK tho it's aliant's modem that they are going to test THEN let Bell use it if it works well...)
I don't think it would be spam if you passed this along to the tech support group. :happy34:

Update on my disconnection woes:

Summary: Made my computer the 'host', I still dropped. Sorry Hunter and Happy (if you are guys are reading this thread). I'll try hooking up only my modem and see how that turns out.
It turns out the wireless router I was refering to wasn't actually it. It is what you are talking about, parkerbsb. It's a wireless modem. I tried setting that up only on my computer but it was not able to complete the setup! Ugh! The software is poor design, it's supposed to check for firewalls and it came clean, then I had found out I still had one up. I thought that solved the problem, but nope, nothing. I think if I removed what XP setup for my ethernet card, that might solve the problem. It did for my printer anyway when the software was trying to find it.

Just to make it clear, when you mentioned that the other computers didn't drop, did you actually play on any of them?
