lol I see another dii player transferred over. Yes, you have to buy an identification kit, but during the early stages of the game, your better off not to buy them. They cost 100 gold, and the items you find in the beggining will actually make you loose profit.

yeah, Shakur's right,
Some of the items you find have a value of, lets say, 3<gold>. But when you salvage them the salvaged item is worth only 1<gold>. So it's not a very cost effective thing at all.
My advice is to sell everything until you reach lvl 4, and then start salvaging things. Salvage most items up to lvl 6 or 7, depending on when you go to the academy that is. 7 is a good lvl for that. I know they say 3, but pfffffttt to that idea! You haven't earnt enough XP or gold at that lvl.
You will need salvaged items when you get to Post Searing Ascalon, mainly to craft into armour. It depends upon your primary class as to what salvage items you need for crafting into armour. So ask around for what you need.
Also identify kits are used on items that usually have a coloured name.
These items are sometimes identified as 'prescious' and salvage for 20G or so.
