    try this:

close zone alarm. i actually would recommend just uninstalling the damn thing
as it's practically useless and causes more problems than anything.

try the game and see if it works. if it doesn't:

go back into your router and look for a "DMZ" option. it'll ask you to input an
ip address, put your computer's IP address in here. to find out what your
    comp ip is, follow:

start > run > cmd (enter)

    you'll see something like:

    C:\Windows>

    type "ipconfig" then press enter.

    "IP Address . . . . : 192.168.10.x"

is what you're looking for. it may not look exactly like that, but that's the
ip address of your computer. put this into the DMZ (you may not have to put
the whole line, some routers only ask for the very last number) and apply
the settings then try gw again.

Zonealarm has been borked up net connections since SP2. Recommend disabling any software firewalls to trouble shoot your connection issues. If disabling ZA allows error free connections to Anet I would suggest visiting ZA support.

Well having a router and a software firewall aren't really necessary. So uninstalling ZA isn't such a bad idea. The only thing about going into the DMZ is that you're exposing the pc to the internet defeating the purpose of a firewall/router. I don't know if he's willing to do that.

Seems to me there is limited connection to Anet, then for some reason the connection is being restricted. hence the err = 5 and not err = 7 (no connection).

What sort of connection speed do you have?

true enough that it does open all the ports to his comp, but this is more
of a troubleshooting step than anything. if it works with just the port forward
without zone alarm, then great. but if it doesn't and the dmz does, then we
know that the problem lies somewhere else.

hmm, where can i find the DMZ, are you talking about the netgear routers or is it in every routers?
