It is very sad, but it is not like the city was started out below sea level. The city was original just an outpost near the Mississippi river. The city original was almost all above sea level. Now the city has speard out to encompass the lower lying areas. The parts of the city that is residental are all above sea level. They wouldn't let people have houses and apartments in the places in the city that are below sea level. The other problem came from the destruction of the marshes and wetlands around New Orleans. The diversion of the river stopped the sediments from being deposited around the region, without the sediment, the marshes and wetlands disappeared. Some of them were also drained to create more living space for the population of the region. Those areas act as a giant sponge when floods come. Also, the addition of levees and dikes created a giant bowl that rings the city, effectively trapping all water in the lower areas of the city. The center of the city has been sinking for decades due to the ground water being removed. The "bowl" becomes even deeper due to this sinking.

I just had to share what I have heard about this situation. The saddest experience I have heard was about a man and his decision. The man, his wife & children tried to hunker down and weather the storm. As the water continued to rise, they had to move higher and higher in the house. As the water filled the attic they were in, the father and mother started moving the children out of the attic and on to roof. I believe they were going to swim or float to another house were other people were staying. They must have waited to long to start the move, because as the last child was being passed out to the roof as the attic filled up. The father had his child/ren (im not sure about how many) in one hand and with his other he tried to pull his wife from the attic. He could not pull her from the hole (or window...again the details are not real clear). He just kept trying and pulling, but she was some how stuck. She told him to forget about her and save the children. He some how had to make that decision right there, on the spot. In that moment he made his choice, but what a choice it was. The father was able to save his children and eventually was picked up by a rescue team and later interviewed by some reporter. The only things he could say were like "I had to leave her", "She's gone". Imagine the constant wondering if you could have avoided making that choice.

There can be no doubt that is wrong, but the sickest thing I have heard is a sniper attacking a hospital while they are trying to evacute the injured. The doctors and nurses had to stop trying to move the sick and dying to a better place with food, water and electricity because someone/s were attacking them as they tried to save lives. How can there be any sense in this attacks?

The dumbest was when they had to stop evacuating the Superdome yesturday due to gun battles inside of the dome between rival gangs. WHAT CAN THEY POSSIBLY BE FIGHTING OVER?

You'll probably have to Copy/Paste and manually remove any spaces and formatting that the forum adds.

If I ever thought up something so great I couldn't hold it in, I'd probably stop trying and just let it out, because that would really be the smarter thing to do.

Somehow I can't quite picture your "students" learning much, besides learning how to function without sleep .
