Apologies if this has been asked before, but every time I try to search for this, it fails on me saying page cannot be displayed :(
I already have one standard GW account that I bought from Best Buys. A coworker of mine thought he might be interested in GW and bought a copy of from Circuit City. He played for about a week, but it just didn't captivate him. I want to buy it off of him, but how will registration occur? He already set up an account with his CD key...how is that going to work if I get the CD key from him? Can he delete his account, and I begin a new one using that key? Will I have to forever log in as his account information?
Sorry if this has been discussed at length, but again search isn't working now, and I want to get it from him today if I can...thanks for any insight!
It's actually against the EULA to buy an already registered account....but that's never stopped anyone before.
If you or he logs into the account you can change the e-mail adress and password. Just note that he will receive an e-mail reguarding these changes and he needs to confirm that the password change and e-mail changes are legit.
Then just delete his characters and the account will be ready for a clean start.
This is my signature.

Wasn't trying to cheat the system or anything - just thought I'd help my coworker out ya know? Thanks for the help!
Whether or not the transfer of an account is legal or not, it would violate the EULA. Normally it wouldn't be that important to this discussion, but this site enjoys status as a.. er, what is it called? "Elite Fan Site"? Anyways, they enjoy a special relationship with ANet that gives them many benefits, but also requires them to not harbor discussions detailing how to circumvent their security, break their EULA,exploit the game, or anything like that.
In short, that conversation cannot happen here. Sorry.

Ok selling accounts is against the EULA. And how about giving them away?. If i decided to give my account to a friend would I be violating the EULA? If I decided to do that I would also need the above information (changeing email adress and so on). The information about the ability to chengae the email isn't illegal and does not vilate the EULA so I don't see why it should be delited.
Should we ban kitchen knifes because you can kill people with them?
If I'm not mistaken, it's not so much that selling your account is in violation of the EULA, as much as TRANSFERRING an account. So, no distinction between selling and giving.
Information on changing the e-mail address is ok, except in context of how to circumvent the EULA. If you are interested in learning how to change the e-mail address associated with an account, you can even go check ANet's site and click on support. Or, start a thread and ask on here, though I'd imagine a search would turn up a pre-existing thread. Remember, the Devil's in the details.
Keep in mind, if the owners of this forum wanted to allow such info to be discussed, there is nothing stopping them. However, there is similarly nothing stopping ANet from treating those who run this site like best buddies and confidants, and that's something those who run the site wish to avoid. It's not so much that someone's wielding a stick as much as someone might take away the carrot.

why is this against the eula though?? The game was bought legally and if someone decides to part with the copy that doesn't mean copyright is in any way infringed ( the guy parting with his copy can't use the account anymore as it's transferred ,email changed etc. ) . Sure would like clarification on this- undoubtedly very complicated - legal issue .
Well, in a way it is a complicated legal issue... however, the primary issue here has nothing to do with the law.Originally Posted by Alexia of Durham

Is it legal to transfer an account? Not important, for purpose of this discussion. If you want to discuss this further, it must happen elsewhere. Trust me, I'm not a lawyer, but I make my career out of the IT field, and I have followed these sorts of issues quite a bit. I'm chock full of opinions and ideas on the subject, but out of respect for this site, I am showing an incredible amount of self-control and not spouting them off on a soap box here.
In summary, what you need to know is:
1) Transferring an account violates the EULA. Right or wrong, legal or not, that is how it is. I am not making any statements pro or con here, just stating how it is.
2) This site has an agreement with ANet that is beneficial to the site, part of which states they will not harbor instructions to violate the EULA. What is legal or not has nothing to do with it - an agreement exists between this site and ANet. Since I like this site, I respect that agreement. This too is not a judgment condoning or condemning this, it is merely a statement of fact.
I know, it can be hard to reconcile these issues with your own view of how things should be, especially if one is filled with righteous indignation. And though there are numerous things in how thise site is run that I disagree with, I do overall respect this site, and so I respect their rules, and even though I would love to get into an in-depth discussion on some of these topics, I won't do so here. Find another place for it to occur, and I'm fine with that. However, I'm sure the mods are already watching this thread anxiously, so be sure to obey the rules in posting your replies. Okay?
EDIT: I forgot to say this before hitting submit, but... In all honesty, I don't think I can explain the stiuatio any better than I have, on these forums. Therefore, the likelyhood of me making more posts in this thread isn't all that high. Never say never, but...
