You can always click on your companions' name and you'll see him if he is in your radar. Otherwise, ask your companion to "ping" his location by clicking on his radar where he died. You'll know the general direction and, as soon as you are in radar range you can select your friend in the party window.

Double click the name of your pet (or any other ally, living or dead) in the allies list to automatically follow and find them.
