Eragon, Pendragon, and Keys to the Kingdom (Err.. I think that's what it was called...) are some of my favorites. Pendragon is a ten book series, not finished yet, and most people would say it's childish... but, mai gawd, the most recent book (I think it's the eighth) is friggin' insane. It is just amazing... One of the most intense plot twists I have ever seen, messes with your mind. I can seriously NOT wait for the next book to come out.
EDIT! Holy gawds! I went to check, and... THE NINTH BOOK CAME OUT!1!!!!!1!CAPSLOCK1!
Must.. get.. to store!

Fighter: Why are these people sleeping?
Black Mage: Er uh. Because they are tired?
Fighter: Why are these people on fire?
Black Mage: Ah.. Um. They were cold?
Do you have libraries? Not being sarcastic. I read so much that I'd go broke if I had to buy the books--5 or 6 every three weeks, sometimes more, is what I take out from the library. Hey, it's free and they'll get me any book I want from other libraries, shipped to the one in my town, also free. You can't beat it.

The library is pitifully small. Both of them, would you believe. Hell of a lot of reference material, though, but classic novels or books of interest? Not gonna happen. I did however once find a fascinating book on gangster-related movies. That probably says more about the town than anything else I could say.
And there's the small matter of a fee and a scary librarian, which is awkward.
Our library isnt all that good here either and they charge if I want a book from another library -_-
However, I do read alot and it seems to be where alot of the money I spend goes. I tend to re-read alot of the series I own once I've finished my new books.
I'm currently reading Richard A Knaak's latest Diablo trilogy (I had the very first of his diablo books given me with a game and I've carried on with them from then on, they're actually nice little reads for when I only want something for a single day to get through). Its fairly decent but then his a good author.
I'm constantly re-reading Ian Irvines "Three Worlds Cycle", which so far has three series inside it. Starting with "The View from the Mirror Quartet" (the best of the series imo) then "The Well of Echoes Quartet" and finally "The Song of the Tears Trilogy" which I'm eagerly awaiting the final book to be released.
Other books I keep turning back to is hte Dune series, thats both the originals by Frank herbert and the continuations by Brian herbert/Richard J Anderson. Brians son did a pretty good job with the universe that his father created though I think the latest release I read where he finishes off the original series, something his father couldn't do due to death, was a little disappointing. I'm waiting for Paul of Dune to be released still though which fills in a fair amount of missing time of Paul Atreides (one of the original main chars).
And finally Steven Eriksons "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series, its a series my GF introduced to me afew years back and I'm pretty amazed by it all so far. I've got the latest book sitting on my shelf waiting to be read when I finish what I'm currently reading. I'd recommend it to any fantasy fan who's got time on thier hands.
Of course there's also LOTR but I haven't read that in a good year or two...
Yeh, I'm a fantasy/sci-fi fan....

Forget libraries. Go sit in Borders or Barnes & Noble (those are book stores, if you're scratching your head) and read the books you want. Maybe pay $4 for a latte while you're at it, if you really feel the need to unload some change.
Although it sounds like our non-American posters got the short end of the public library system stick. Mine aren't stocked with every fantasy/sci-fi title I want, but it has the more classic or mainstream content covered. (like Bradbury, etc)
A sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.
We have waterstones for that (largest book store chain I know of in the UK). I see plenty of people who just sit in one of thier comfy chairs reading through what has to be most/all of a book (I'm guessing, seeing as its a fantasy book or some such and they're 3/4 of the way through it..).
There's two in Birmingham (closest big city to me) that stock pretty much every book I've wanted or even thought of buying.

Currently reading "Fleet of Worlds" by Larry Niven and Edward M. Lerner. It's good so far. In the past couple of weeks, I've read Zalazney's Amber Chronicles, "Number of the Beast" and "Stranger in a Strange Land" By Robert Heinlein, and reread "The Hobbit". I used to read a lot more, but I used to have more free time.
I just recently joined one of those mail-order book clubs; they have a good selection and are fairly cheap. I'd go to the local library more, but their hours aren't really compatible with my working a third shift job.

I'm really into the fantasy-type books.
Some must-reads, for that matter:
His Dark Materials Trilogy, by Phillip Pullman.
Good Omens, a collaboration between Terry Prachett and Neil Gaiman.
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.
...actually, anything else by those two.
Also, for fans of vampire or romance, check out the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse.) I know she may not be the best writer, but this series is so entertaining. I read New Moon in ~6 hours because I couldn't stop. A guilty pleasure. <3
Also, I figured out today that good writings tend to have Cliff Notes (or Spark Notes) out for them.
