Well, you have choices...
Warrior is probably the most general-purpose effective melee char out there. Dervish should also be considered, with potent maintainable self-enchants that can also be used either as tank or melee AoE damager.
The only other melee char is the assassin, which is usually not considered as flexible because it is more meant to be used as a midline, i.e. using hit & run tactics.
I'd porbably go with W/E. W/E gives you some pretty potent defensive spells for tanking (when needed), as well as conjures for extra damage.
W/P gives you the spear, other uses for shield, and party support. It also synergizes with adrenaline.
W/R is nice for preparations, running skills, and self-defense. Don't expect to be using traps or bow skills, you'll run out of energy.
W/D could use some self-enchants, but energy management might be an issue.
I don't have a lot of experience with melee even though I have a W and a D character, so that's all I can say for now.

As mentioned above, the best starting 2nd for a Warrior is monk. Self heals, condition removal, etc.. If you are running Nightfall, you will be able to change professions to whatever you want to try fairly quickly after leaving Istan (the starter Isle).

I wouldn't go /r or youwill start using a pet and warriors aren't good with pets so go something else /P maybe.
