what is the point of titles?

Something to strive for whether it is for personal achievement, to show off, or just something to do.
It can't really be said if there is a point to them or not-everyone has their own opinion.
Some titles affect PvE game progression.
Some titles have PvE skills tied to them.
Some titles provide other in-game benefits.
Some armor styles can only be purchased by having titles of certain levels.
Some titles have fancy emotes.
Some titles do nothing at all, except to add another title to the Hall of Monuments.

It's one of those questions...
What is the point of having a Rolex instead of a Timex when both will tell you the time?
What is the point of having a designer's tag inside your blouse where no one can see it anyway?
Some titles actually offer a boost to your game play, but for the most part titles offer goals and incentives to reach those goals. As long as the player is actually enjoying playing the game while reaching the title then titles are grand. Titles are only a problem when the player feels forced to reach them, which should never be the case.
Myself I instituted a perfectly silly goal: to create a complete polymock set for my monk. There is no real advantage in having this done -- not even in the form of a title -- but it was a personal goal, I enjoyed reaching it, and I'm glad to have completed it. Whether I ever use my Gaki to defeat Hoff or not. In my mind that's what the titles should be, just something to give direction in game play.
Besides setting goals and giving direction, the reason why I personally enjoy titles and maxing them out is that they show somekind of personal progress through the game...especially since there is no leveling up beyond lvl20. If additionally there is even a benefit to any of the titles, that makes it more worth it.

For me, the major reason for getting titles is that it forces me to play better. Aside from consumption-based titles and easy titles, most of the work in building the KoaBD title is playing in HM. I've learned a lot playing HM that I otherwise would probably not learn.
It also pushes me to play every area, every mission, every bonus. I can't just skip something because it is too hard, I have to find a way through.

You can tell the quality of life of people by what they complain about
It is also reported that title acheivments are going to have some direct benifit to characters in GW2. So alot of people are grinding titles now in the hopes to reap the benifits later on. I only did enough titles to get lvl 2 KoaBD to get the rainbow phoenix....don't care to do anymore now.![]()
The cartographer, skill hunter, and protector titles give me a sense of completion. I don't really bother with any other titles.
To earn bonuses for GW2 and to keep playing GW1 while we wait for GW2.
