just a question that thing that started the searing is that similr to the one in the stronghold in sacnoth looks kinda ancient too
"That thing" would be the Cauldron of Cataclysm. And I do not recall seeing a copy of it in Sacnoth Valley. I will vanquish it this weekend and take a look.
the one in sacnoth looks similar but bigger
I'll save some hassle:

Ah, thank you Karuro.
By the looks of it, mainly due to the flame, I'd say it is just simply a larger copy. That, or it's the same one (resized) that is being used for the wrong purpose.
But in order to confirm this, I'll be needing to see it up close later.
The Crystal Desert being formed by a Searing is a very interesting idea, I never thought of that. Actually, it makes a lot of sense.
It may be the very cause of the rise of the Crystal Sea, which wouldn't than be happening in one big disaster, but rather over a larger period of time. As the Crystals in the Crystal Sea would begin to erode, the sand that came from the erosion would slowly make the Crystal Sea rise, till it had become the Desert as we know it today.
This idea is build on the fact that all(/most of the) the vegetation in the Crystal Desert is in the lower area's (hence The Scar and around Augury Rock), because that is where the non-Crystal Sand would be, the normal sand, so to speak.
Well anyway..that's just speculation. Just thought of it since I don't recall having ever read that the rise of the Crystal Sea happened overnight or something like that.
theres one in Gwen's story at the begining which looks like the one in northlands but that most likley a becon of sorts

Perhaps I am mistaken but I always assumed that when the Gods struck down Abaddon in the Desolation that he would have put up some resistance, being the God of water and seeing as the Crystal sea vanished.
It was mentioned in the manuscripts that the five Gods raised the land under the Crystal Sea before leaving. Perhaps this was an act of Abaddon or a way to prevent man gaining access to the mouth of torment.
I do not believe it was to prevent man from gaining access to the
Mouth of Torment either since surely with it being under the water it would be just as inaccessible. So I suspect that it was Abaddons cause and so not that of any ancient weapon or a 'searing' (Although I am aware that there may be a connection between Abaddon and The Searing).
Year 0AE: The five gods forge the bloodstones to control magic. The Crystal Desert is formed and the Desolation created. Margonite civilization collapses. The five gods leave the physical world.
I do not think that a desert can form naturally in such a short time, presuming the scripture of abaddon is accurate in stating 1BE and that the Primeval Kings were buried in the desert in 29AE.
i remeber seeing somewhere that the water was boiled away when Abaddon wiped out the forgotten warships... but then if the water was boiled away wouldn't more water fill in the space?
