Some companies seem to manage it - when it's free, you generally have way more people checking out your microtransactions and pay walls. Micros are usually more palatable anyway, since you buy something concrete that no one takes away from you, unlike a temporary sub - it's more psychological than anything else, but I'm way more willing to pay for content (if the game is good) than a temporary key that gets me nothing as soon as I stop feeding it money.

yeah, it CAN BE pretty profitable if done right. But they probably won't do it right.

it worked with LotR Online. I don't know how well it's worked out with AoC and STOnline but, everyone must be jumping on the bandwagon for a reason.

I have a few gaming and computer related pages liked on my Facebook, and they all posted about SWtOR going f2p. The overwhelming response on those pages (from random people I don't know anything about) reads something like this:
"Don't care, GW2 is out soon, so it doesn't even matter."
Now, I have a few SWtOR fanboys to go gloat at. Heh, heh, heh.

lotro is the only game that has done it the best way, city of heroes being the second best.
you can play the basic game and you are offered to pay something to get something extra, lotro even allows players to get points in-game so you pretty much don't have to pay a dime, it's still an option.
now games like champions online or star trek online pretty much forces you to pay a monthly fee in order to enjoy the game, the basic game is behind the subscription and you can only use boring place holders.
the question now remains, is SWToR going for the lotro plan or the STO plan?
LotRO did a GREAT job with F2P. Everything about their advertising and marketing was just great for a while. I think it's kind of died out at this point, but their F2P system was fantastic. You just bought things once and it unlocked for your account.

There's a reason people switch to F2P, and my guess is it's a combination of (1) less competition from other sub games, (2) more players which is always good, (3) compensate lower income per player by higher volume, and (4) some players end up paying more than they would with a sub.
