We need a book thread too!

Perish the thought. Nothing can compare to curling up with a good (real) book.

Eh, I didn't say that it was preference, but I had to get rid of a bunch (100ish) of books when I moved back stateside from the Army a few years ago, and don't really have the space right now to start collecting real books again.

Depends on where you live, what language you read most and what kinds of book you like reading.

The Kindle 3 is a good choice (husband got it pre-ordered) but only if you read mostly English and your choice of shops is smaller, unless you're prepared to remove DRM and convert.

Amazon uses mobipocket format, while the rest of the world is slowly moving towards epub. Now, if you don't mind removing DRM (I have absolutely no problems with that, DRM = evil), converting from epub to mobipocket is easy.

I use two readers, mostly. A LCD, WinCE based one, for night time reading, an e-ink 5", for day-time reading and a SiPix 6" for the livingroom (I think I'll put that one in the kitchen when we actually have a kitchen again, for recipes and such).

Yeah, I don't know any other languages, at least not enough to read something. Removing DRM wouldn't bother me much, and I don't really need some of the fancier features like 3G access...I'll be doing my own research on them, but thought I'd try to get some personal opinions as well. Guess I should also mention that I'd like something under $200 US.

I've enjoyed everything I've read by Terry Brooks, also most of Dean Koontz, and earlier Stephen King books (before Dark Tower, read the first of that series and hated it). I remember Anne McAffrey's (sp?) Dragonriders series was pretty good.

Oh, if you like historic fiction, and the Arthur Legend in particular, I'd like to recommend Stephen R. Lawhead's Pendragon series. Taliesin is the first, followed by Merlin, Arthur and Pendragon. There is a fifth, Grail, but I haven't read that one yet.

Oh my goodness, I loved that series. We have it in paperback, and I've read most of them to tatters. Except Grail. Grail sucked. It was set in the modern day and the entire tone of the book was jarring when you considered that it was supposed to be a part of the series. It didn't fit. :(

I first had the audiobook. It was actually the second book at Audible I'd bought. The narrator of that books is simply awesome. I generally don't like female narrators, but this one is really good. Now I have them both in Audible and ebook format. Once I've finished those books by that Dutch author, I'll continue with Arthur (I left off there, somewhere in April...)

I had to read 1984 for school and it killed it for me. Completely sucked the joy of reading from it.

The UK education system sucks the joy out of any book it forces you to touch.

Anyway, I'm less than a fifth of the way toward finishing the second Dresden Files book, Fool Moon. Once that's out of the way I've got Warren Ellis' Crooked Little Vein to brave... it's very twisted, apparently (I wouldn't know, really, having only read FreakAngels, Anna Mercury and a bit of newuniversal out of all of Ellis' works so far). Then I'll return to Dresden.

All this while still waiting for Andrzej Sapkowski's Times of Contempt to be translated into English.

I actually like that series too. Haven't read Pendragon or Grail yet. Have to get around to it now! Thanks!


Also while I am thinking about it, L.A. Banks has a great series called Vampire Huntress that has a ton of book. It is a really great series with lots of fighting evil, romance, and crazy plot twists and turns!

I love the fantasy genre, some writers I adore will follow below. Some of the books I read in translated versions (because I read alot of those books when I was 12-16 and my library didn't have them in English).

Terry Goodkind - He wrote a series of books where Kahlan also got her name from, it's well written, intruiging, epic and funny.

Terry Brooks - Shannara rocks, no need to say more

Robin Hobb - Trilogy's like the Tawny Man Trilogy and all the books set in that world (the one with the living ships and the one about the bastard from the king) are pretty darn awesome.

Robert Jordan - The Wheel of Time is another epic series by a great writer, almost as good as Goodkind.

David Eddings - My personal favourite. The Elenium and The Tamuli are so brilliant, these are my favourite two trilogies and the most fun books I ever read. I'm really hooked to the world he created there and the persons he made. And it is so funny at times. Best. Books. Ever.

Don't really like other genres, besides I started playing Guild Wars because books were too addicting, if I start reading I never ever stop. So I hesitate to start with a new book. Am currently writing one though, less addictive, more frustrating
