When you purchase a costume from the store via card payment, is the costume automatically assign to your account or do you later get a key code to type into your account?

Automatically applied to the account you logged into the store with. No key code is given to you to type in.
then why does it say
Includes:
* A serial code for account upgrade.
* Access to three costumes with all five wedding outfits: Gwen's bridal dress, Keiran's tuxedo, the formal gown, the gentleman's tuxedo, and the lady's tuxedo.
Buuuut I guess you can't get it externally?

The serial code is apparently automatically applied to the account.
I bought this the same day it came out and it was automatically applied to the account. I was not given and did not have to enter a serial code.
It shows up as a separate key in the Manage Keys option, but does not show you the serial code.
There is an actual serial code of course, it's just automatically applied when purchased through the online store, so you don't see it. Not sure if you get a code you apply yourself if you buy it through NCSoft's website.
**As The Pointless pointed out, you do in fact get an email with the serial code, but it's applied automatically, so it's just for your records.

It gets auto-applied to your GW account the same as if through the ingame store, though if you have more than one GW account attached to your NCSoft Master account and lacking said key, it'll ask you which one you want it attached to.
You'll still get the key sent to you via email, for safe keeping, but you don't actually get to see the full code until then.
There's no shame in asking questions. Ask away at the Newcomer and Questions Forum for GW2. GW1 archive here.
Here comes your warrior, he's letting you know... that you can discuss the profession here.
