Add 'Asura Commando' to my previous list.
Human/Charr ranger (not sure, dont really care since it will be mule/lowly alt)
Human mesmer/engineer/new class
yeah, I hate norn, asura and probably sylvari too. So unless there's interesting benefit from racial skills I'll play mostly humans.
Being human-centric for your own char choice is fine... I do hope that you won't discriminate against other players picking different races though...
I'll have one of each race, but human is probably the char I'll spend the least amount of time on. I'm not very human-centric when I play a game. Norn is high on the list but only because of the animal forms. Same for Asura and golems and tech. Charr and Sylvari are awesome concepts.
I am pretty much affected by my Pen&Paper RPG background when choosing races. Most of my male mates chose humans, because they are the easiest to get used to in most RPGs and they are not really rule geeks. The females often chose Elves, which left me with the "stranger" types of races, like dwarves, halflings, etc.
My quirk has always been to try something that isn't usually associated with the race, like a dwarven priest, a halfling warrior or an Elf that used Muskets & Pistols (Spelljammer setting) instead of typical bows.
Approach for the Norn will be something like: "To be really great, you have to be standing on the shoulders of giants! I am your giant and you better remember my name!" A guardian will be a good role for her.
I can't say that I really hate any of the other races, like Ringsgold said. Its the type of players that play them filled up with stereotypes that makes me cringe: Naruto Sins & Legolas Rangers
I haven't changed my mind yet about the preferences I wrote down here before. Still waiting for Sylvari info.
Haha Gorani, I am totally with you on picking odd choices. I think Sylvari Guardian is odder than Norn Guardian though ;)
I want odd choices because I like being an outcast character (provided it's not gimped or actually outcast in-game). Like my character has picked a profession not because it's the socially accepted norm, but because that's what he/she is passionate about.
The combo still has to make some sense. An asura would pick a profession that would use his brain, but for example it could be something like ranger / thief / guardian rather than warrior (brawn) or elementalist / mesmer (accepted norms). Likewise, Charr or Norn would pick spellcasting because they like the raw power of magic.
Since I have to look at the "back" of my character for many many hours, appearance and armour will be a major turn on or turn off for a race. From what I have seen Charr, either male or female don't appeal to me in light armour, male Norns are too bulky anyway and heavy armour Asura kind of looked silly. If female Asura look too "adorable" or female Sylvari look too "manga-nised", I might deviate from playing an all girl cast again (which is another of my habits in computer RPGs).
I've read that Daniel Docio will tell us something about the Sylvari redesign in the discussion forum. I am excited.
That interview was a downer. No new info on Sylvari. Bummer.
So I changed my mind, I think I really prefer the charr ele and asura ranger, rather than charr ranger and asura ele. It'll depend on the racial skills in the end though, as I do enjoy giving every character more flexibility especially in solo play.
Updated the stats.
In the first few days...
Charr -- Warrior
Human -- Guardian
Sylvari -- Necro
Norn -- Elem (water)
After that, no clue. I just expect to have 3 or 4 warriors between 2 accounts within a few months.
