I think I beat it.
Dropped $15 on PoE for closed beta access (impatience ftw). It's good. I have three complaints so far:
1- Half of the characters aren't sympathetic. The witch killed a bunch of children after villagers burned her house down, the Duelist killed a noble after the noble insulted him, and the shadow pulled some kind of job (doesn't say what, but I'm guessing assassination).
The marauder was basically just taken from his village and the ranger was a "poacher" (she lived off the land and some nobles said she killed "their" animals). The templar, it's hard to say why he was exiled.
But, anyway, the point is, I want to play Duelist, but he's not exactly a good guy.
2- Cannot change gender of the class.
3- You can't zoom out very far at all. It's a little too close up for my taste.
The passive skill trees look massive... I'd be lost spending hours on that instead of actually playing :P

My favorite was D2. D1 was good but gameplay was too close to turn-based (blocky movement) and balance was horrible (warriors were better off spamming spells). The ambiance was great, but I prefer the contrast that outdoor/indoor makes.

Alaris, you may want to give this one a go, once it's F2P. It seems like it's what D3 wasd meant to be.
A few oddities:
1- There is no money. You can only trade items to vendors. They'll give you scraps of other items when you "sell" them stuff. So if you get 5 Scroll Fragments, it becomes a Scroll of Wisdom (IDs items), which you can use for IDing items or to trade to vendors. Kind of crazy.
2- I found myself grabbing everything like it's a normal game, but quickly ran out of inventory space. I asked in global (the community seems really nice!) and they said to grab any item with all three colored slots, linked together, rares, orbs, and gems.
3- Potions regenerate. You don't drink all of a potion in one use; it takes 1/3 of it, which comes back over time.
4- I think you heal to full when you enter a town.

@ Shawn; But you got a lot of games for cheap! :D
@ Alaris; agreed. Hellfire made D1 a little more bearable as far as game play, but D2 did it all.
@ RD; I see wasd you did thar

I wasd about to mention wasd. Also, I have more games than I can play, so I'll skip even this one at f2p unless I run out by then. But thanks, it looks promising.
Meh indeed!
"We're not ready for good PvP, so here's a crappy unbalanced pointless version you can beat each other with until we have something decent."
Really? Could this not have been included in the original release?!?

PoE looks interesting enough, I'm currently downloading it and might give it a try during the weekend.
(... as for D3, haven't played it since like June and likely won't return until the first expansion or whatever)
