Army men... It's a philosophy I do not agree with, however, it's a philosophy that will keep you alive in a war... so it's hard to argue against.
I align more with Sun Tzu.
I am not excited about his profession-unique ability, death shroud.

Should we separate half of these posts out into a 'fight club' thread?
For myself, I currently cross train Muay Thai with a bit of BJJ and modern latin/ballroom, having previously done western kickboxing.
I find it all highly cathartic and am much less aggressive generally as a result.
Muay Thai is especially well suited for pub brawls (I look forward to that aspect of GW 2, knee those char in the face), fortunately I've rarely had to use it in anger.
In the ring, in competitions, I've found that it is the most composed and in control rather than the most outright aggressive fighter who prevails.
It's a shame there won't be a monk fighter class for GW2

Fight thread sounds awesome!
I want to pick up some kind of martial arts, but, honestly, with my fitness goals, I shouldn't even really be boxing.

Martial arts monks are cool though, admittedly I might be a bit biased cause one of my first rpg games I played was FF Tactics and the monk in that game is pure win. I don't really like the other classes you mentioned though, with the possible exception of barbarian.
Spoony bards give me a headache, I want to tell Berserkers to relax, and runemasters... umm, draw a lot? Idk on that one tbh, don't hear of it much. Oh wait, is that like Fullmetal Alchemist or something? Where people try their best to decrease casting time because it normally takes a good long time? Yeah, no thanks, sure it works well when the lore is built around it, but when you've got other spellcasters waving their hands and completing their spells in under a second a runemaster is just odd.

Don't see what all those above comments were supposed to be about, the point was simply that those five classes tend to always come up in some way in suggestions.
how's about for the gw2 cantha expansion a fighting+smiting martial monk

If you want martial monks, Diablo 3.
I could see an expansion for GW2 having those too...

Biggest issues I see with these would be explaining why they never actually use the weapons they carry (Which Anet could certainly do in the game mechanics, but would likely feel odd to play), and finding some sensible way to give them ranged attacks. (Telekinesis, perhaps, if mesmers aren't already given that skill archetype well covered.)
