#2: Guns are hotly debated, as you so well pointed out, and what I wrote above was my own bet / personal preference. For the record, you're debating on assumed lore rules, whereas I am debating from aesthetics and flexible gameplay. I see both points of views as valid and important... it could go either way.
#5: This point was more about mesmers losing the priviledge of being the best-dressed class. Unless "fashion" is their profession-specific mechanic.![]()

Remember, even though mesmers are the social elite of the human race, we have no such indication for the other races having the same viewpoint of mesmers. A skald from the norn could easily be their version of the mesmer, and I really don't see them as fancifully dressed. Just my opinion, and really does anyone want to see a Charr female sporting some the the GW1 mesmer fashions. REALLY!
Edit: Alaris, you seem to be wholly basing you image of the mesmer on some medieval/renaissance version of a social elite duelist. I see a big flaw in that image, based on the fact that not just humans are going to mesmers, we have to account for the Norn, who are not a particularly sophisticated race, and the Charr, who are very roman like in their approach to life and who knows what a plant thinks of as a social structure.

Now that you mention it, I would like to see charr female in mesmer clothes. That'd be roflmao-worthy.
In other news, mesmers weren't elite, they just dressed like they were. Some of them were actors, guards, and even *gasp* blobs.

You guys can have your darn Chronomancer, but not until an expansion! Skald sounds nice, too, but bard-type characters are rarely done right.
Have to admit that sadly I missed your bias note the first read through :S
Anyway, I know where you're coming from and I know you understand that guns aren't a sure thing at all, but I think the possibility is even more bleak than you want to admit.
Also, I'm not really debating on assumed lore rules so much as I'm debating from a gameplay/balancing aspect. If all but one class are based around an either or rule, the likelihood of the remaining class having both is really extremely slim. So far all classes have had either guns/bows or magical implements for long ranged attacks, and some (mainly scholars) get the added ability to use daggers as medium range throwing weapons. I guess mesmers could forgo daggers and use guns instead... but that doesn't sound very balanced. Just keep in mind the old saying of not taking daggers to gunfights, oh wait that was swords but still.
Not saying there isn't the possibility, as some choices have surprised me, but considering most of the surprises were that a class didn't get certain weapons (how can you be an engineer and not know how to use a hammer anyway?) I have to caution you not to get your hopes up, or more likely, someone else's.
Oh yeah, another balancing issue, mesmers are loved/hated in pvp, how much would guns add to that love hate relationship in gw2's pvp?
I'm getting sidetracked. Sylvari are going to be announced before gamescom! Yaaaay! Hmm, which week do you think they'll do it? Next week or the week after? Edit #12: Oh, or the week after that, thought there were only 3 weeks including this one until then for some reason

Not sure I follow your either/or long-range concept.
Warrior gets to use longbow and rifle. Thief has pistols and shortbow. Or did you mean staff/scepter doesn't mix with other ranged weapons (dagger being the exception)?
Keep in mind that mesmers may need more flexibility in their skill choices, so they may end up having more weapon choices. I would not be surprised to see scepter, daggers, and pistols.
Back to topic:
Finally so want to see sylvari! It's been a contender for main character for a while, it really depends on the redesign (and of course, racial skills).
