You can tell the quality of life of people by what they complain about
Ratings are based on gameplay. Other than the hipster rating, which is just how popular each class is (Guardian is one of the most popular so it gets a lower rating). I'd rather play a profession that not as many people play. I should probably add some more ratings like Look/aesthetics. Also, the non-exclusive ranking is better, but tied.
I also made a pro/con list like you did Alaris, and the funny thing is, Necro has no cons that I can think of. I think pros+cons of other classes outweigh just pros of Necro though, so I can eliminate that one I think.
So as of right now it's:
1. Sylvari/Norn Guardian or Sylvari Elementalist
2. opposite of #1
3. Sylvari/Norn Ranger
Unless they change Rangers epicly. Thief will go along with my #1 as WvWvW only.

So alaris isn't going necro because of some fantasy lore? Odd reason. Lore can be whatever, it won't change how the class plays. Lore's nice and al lbut i care more for actual gameplay, if you want just lore, go read books.![]()

@Xilisys: What do you mean by non-exclusive ratings?
Also, I will go not only for less-popular professions, but also less-popular profession/race combos. Not because they're less popular though, more because I like to think outside the box.
@Kronez: to clarify, gameplay-wise the engineer, necro, and guardian are tied, and well above the other 4-5 professions. Lore is the tie-breaker, not the important factor.

I did two ratings: one where each profession could only be ranked by itself (so if Guardian is 5, no other could be 5), and the other where all could be 5 if I deemed them worthy. I edited my previous post some so check that out.
Someone on Reddit took some data from polls of people on the GW2 subreddit for race/profession combos if you're interested...Race/Profession Chart
Yes it was. Alaris, Xilisys, please keep your private conversation to PMs and stay on topic here.

on topic:
The Devs said that the switching cost between crafting professions will scale with how high your tier of ability is. So switching a lot might be a costly thing.

Don't encourage him!
Anyway, I had no clue that the game had food and jewelry. I guess it adds a little more charm to the game even though I'm not crazy about consumables. I see them as a handicap and I hardly bother with them. That being said, I'd probably still cook and probably won't limit my crafting to just one character. Not just because of the penalties but because I won't neglect my other characters.
The six slots named "secondary" right below the attributes are for the jewelry, so you will have the chance to wear several (2 earrings, 2 rings, one necklace & a cloak IIRC; The slots are there in the current demo too, I just could not find a pic or reasonable size).
You don't have to "eat" in guildwars, but food pretty much is what consumables are in GW1 today. They grant a boon/buff for a short period of time.
