In the way that Ritualists were indirect suppport in GW1, many classes in GW2 can support their allies as the Ritualist did. Rangers can bring nature spirits, Necromancers can bring minions, Elementalists can bring familiars, Mesmers have their illusions, etc. etc. All classes can bring buffs, boons, etc.

I uh, thought that familiars were mentioned in a recent interview, then they apologized and said there won't be any.
Maybe it's a leak though... one can hope.

Are you sure this is an English quote and something like Google-Translate did not change "conjures" into "familiars" somehow?
I still hope for an Elemental Imp summon depending on your current attunement, but I remain a sceptic.
BTW, the current favourite Ele races are: Human, Sylvari, Asura, Norn/Charr, so nothing has changed in the ranking.

As I remember, that was the one where later the devs said there was no elementals, and apologized. Either (1) they want to keep the surprise for later, or (2) it was an honest mistake.

The Elementalist certainly would be augmented by a race that can summon some sort of ally to the battlefield (as would a Warrior or Thief too compared to Necros & Mesmers who got their summons).
BTW: A friend who plays LOTROnline (but does not keep a close eye on the MMO market) was fascinated by Sylvari "plant people" concept. She didn't even think of it as an "elf" when I showed her pictures. Her husband called the way Ridlock runs "awesome" (I showed them the Gamescom trailer). Asura & Humans/Norns left not a big impression.
They both said everything looks so "fancy", which kind of surprised me, as LOTR is very close to what Guild Wars & GW2 look like compared to other MMOs like AION, Warhammer & the old WOW.

To make the current numbers more palpable. The different sizes of the home town icons are in comparison to the big circle (Destiny's Edge) which represents 100%.

Why does the Human icon have some sort of griffon on it? I don't remember griffons in the GW lore :o
