I'd say pop generally takes less skill (as a band) than other styles because:

1) the drum is often drumbox
2) the other instruments are often simplistic
3) even the singer is often of sub-standard skill
4) and the lyrics?

Having said that, there are skilled pop artists, and I respect those. Or I would if I followed the genre and knew who they are (Lady Gaga?).

Must be why I enjoy organ music so much - playing on two manuals (minimum), full pedal board, and changing registration on the fly. Composers like Bach, Widor, and Alain - they wrote such complicated pieces in which the hands and feet are flying all over. And the sounds were stunning. The organ is the only instrument that can over power an orchestra. You can't listen to it without being moved.

I don't know how you deduced that from me claiming that screamo isn't music. I never said I didn't like Metal, since last time I checked, not all metal included screaming like you are having a pitchfork driven through your throat. If I didn't like music, I wouldn't have played the saxophone in my school band from 4th grade to 10th grade.

Nah, I was just getting on your case because you kept saying "i don't like this kind of music" "i don't like that kind of music" "this isn't music" "i just don't like this kind of music" xD it was all in a joke manner bearsy bears.

I don't mind when people don't like screamo, I'm ok with that. But it is music. Music is not all about the lead singer, also screaming like that takes a lot of skill. (yet another thing that annoys me about pop, why is it called "katy perry" when there's a full team of musicians behind her, also they don't even write their own songs.)

How does pop not take skill to play? Aside from having a manager dictating your every move to aim you at a specific crowd, pop is EVERY bit as musical as rock and other genres.

This. I also agree on Lady Gaga's point. I always defend her talent, but I hate that she sold out and decided to make bad music (on purpose) just to make more money, so I don't really respect her >_> She is remarkably talented, tho Example:

In fact, I will go out and say that if I wanted, I could start a screamo band right now if I wanted, and I'd do it Trent Reznor style and play every instrument. I don't know how to play drums, but that's ok, I can randomly beat on them. I can't sing, so I'll just scream until my throat bleeds. I can't play guitar, so I'll just play random chords and hope I make something that sounds alright. If screaming, randomly beating on the drums (or making the same exact drum hit for the entire song), and making annoying screeching noises with a guitar takes skill, then I'm not quite sure what this world has come to. If you like that kinda stuff, then fine, but I really don't know how it is music. I can't find anything musical about it. I'd really like someone to show me where the musicality is in screamo.

Do you play instruments? Any? (yeah, durr, you said you play the sax, how can you not see that making music always takes skill? you can't create music at random (yet another reason to dislike pop, music is created for them, by people we don't ever see)) I can only speak for the guitar, but usually in metal and screamo (and all those other "things" people don't like to count as music) there is a high amount of skill on everything. It's not their fault you can't see it. I can tell you they're not really beating the drums at random, or playing their guitars at random until they sound acceptable. Screaming and growling is also really really hard to do, and I particularly applaud girls who can do it, because it really is hard. Just try it someday. It is like saying Opera is not music because you don't like how it sounds (and there is a big subsection of the population who don't, but you don't see anyone denying the fact that opera singing is music) Also, the drummer is supposed to keep the beat, he is supposed to sound the same for the majority of the song or he is not doing his job properly. <___< (unless we're talking about Jazz, but jazz is a completely different story)

Again, I can understand that you don't like it, but it is silly to say they don't require skill and/or that they're not music.

LOL Shawn, Dream Theater...their drummer filled in on my favorite band (Avenged Sevenfold, yes yes, I know, they started out screaming, but, they actually DO sing now...they've progressed from just making noise to actually making music) after their drummer died earlier this year. I forget the guys name now though (the guy from Dream Theater...David Poturney or something like that...)

I love Avenged Sevenfold :3 it's one of my favorite bands. Tho, I do like their older stuff. I do think that it was a step on the right direction to stop being screamo tho. The lead singer's voice is quite unique, and he was just not using it to their advantage by screaming.

It's constructed with computers, and very very often the musicians and singers have no part in actual song creation, they just play what's given to them.

I don't know what you mean by screamo. You mean anything where the lyrics aren't explicitly sang? How does the singer have any effect on the rest of the band? Opeth can't play for **** because Mikael death growls?

I'm not saying that EVERY band that has a screamer sucks. I'm simply stating that I don't think of that style as music (I KNOW it is, I just don't see it the same way), since I have a hard time FINDING the musicality in it. However, because I avoid that style of music like the plague, I don't know exactly what there is to be found. I'm sure there are some magnificent BANDS with singers that do nothing but scream. And I won't deny that I'm probably just being unfair to the genre as a whole. I was basing everything off of stuff that I have heard myself, and the stuff I heard really did sound like lots of noise and screaming (literally).

I apologize if I was generalizing too much, and that is wrong of me. But I still can't stand the screaming stuff. Growling is cool, James Hepfield is a BEAST when it comes to growling. Screaming isn't. I can only tolerate the screaming in VERY small doses.

Yes, him. But he left. Now, Arin Ilejay from Confide, is the current drummer, and it sounds like he might end up becoming the permanent drummer. Never heard of the dude though, lol.

For the record, composing is a skill, and playing a song is another. I do respect musicians that do both, but I think it's fine if musicians do either.

They don't write their own songs. They don't play instruments, so they buy people who can blindly play what's fed to them without emotion. They can barely sing without auto tune correction. But they can look pretty and dance, make sheep bop their heads like they're supposed to, and buy their albums because they're popular.


Sounds like everything music should be about, amirite?
