I never understood the fascination with music beyond, I like it, or I don't like it... I often don't even know who sings what I'm listening to and often don't even know the number of the song. Nor do I care...

I like to talk about music, it makes me discover new groups. Otherwise, I would just listen to the same groups over and over.

I listen to the radio. And I'll hear songs I've not heard before. And I listen to Spotify. And I'll search for an artist I know and like and see what other related artists there are... And then listen to those.
But to say that a group "sucks" simply because they only play pop/hiphop/rap/whatever, well, I'll never understand. I wouldn't even know how to classify most of the artists I listen to...

Genre preference is personal and subjective, skill isn't. Some songs are just harder to play than others. I think part of music education is being able to spot skill regardless of genre. Within any genre there is a very wide range of skills, with some musicians getting away with bare minimum skill, others really pushing their skill as far as they can.
Though I admit that some genres attract skillful musicians more than others.

Even appreciation of skill is subjective. If you're as musically handicapped as I am, even being able to follow a beat is amazing
If there's one thing I can't stand in music, it's shouting. Some singers don't sing, they only shout.

I mean that those who play music can usually agree (to some degree) on what is difficult to play and what is easy to play... as well as what requires special skills.
Two example of difficult and special skills:
