That's me as well. I never finished Oblivion, but instead I sank most of my time playing with mods (my forum avatar is a modded Oblivion character). Of course, I think I was upward of some 60+ mods in Oblivion last time I played, and that chewed up quite the CPU and memory.
Anyways, I figured in a few weeks/months, Skyrim should drop to $30-$40ish, and maybe I'll pick it up then.

I remember playing Oblivion for like a month straight right before I got into GWs and didn't have time for anything else. I did finish the main story line, but the game got too easy once you could go invisible all the time. It was a lot of fun though, and if I weren't so busy now I'd pick this up. Can't afford to get sucked into a new game right now unfortunately.
If you know someone with an xbox 360 or ps3 (or have one yourself), then you might be able to rent it to try it out first.
Not sure if they offer that where you are, but here in the US you can do this through Blockbuster Online, Redbox in local stores and things like gamefly.com or a few other services (don't remember if Netflix offered this).
Not sure if Steam has a preview option, that would be another way to try before you buy if they do though.
Hey, it's your lucky day. Oblivion is the mid-week Steam sale and available for $4.99 USD. Have at it!
A sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.

I am loving the leveling system so far. I powerleveled my Sneak by crouching in a corner and using autorun in a tavern for about 2.5 hours afk. Now, my sneak is 86 (and I can sneak right in front of people in low-light), while other main skills are around 35, and it takes forever to get a new level/perk by leveling lower skills.
The game rewards using specific skills of choice, but doesn't allow to create overpowered characters by power-leveling everything.
Now I have a character (lvl 17) who can use stealth to take down very high level, relatively speaking, baddies, but struggles with just a few mid-level baddies.
It is a refreshing game mechanics compared to, say, Oblivion or Morrowind, where you could powerlevel individual skills with impunity.
I do miss Athletics and Acrobatics though...
Yeah, it was so fun to always have to jump around everywhere or feel like you were wasting time by not leveling acrobatics. God, how I hated acrobatics.
I started off by making a full-on Mage character, but magic is just way too powerful. The Impact perk on the destruction tree sounded like a great idea, but it made everything way too easy (damn thing even knocks dragons and giants back). I've since switched to a more martial character and am having loads more fun now, though I do seem to waste a lot of time hunting deer for no discernible purpose as I haven't really been crafting all that much.
I really do miss Ondusi's (sp?) Unhinging, though.

Hm, that's the sort of nonsense I didn't much like but did anyway in Oblivion. I also remember parking my characters down on the lake and letting mudcrabs bash away at them (on the easiest difficulty setting) to level up armour while afk. Stoopid, but got the job done.
How well do the NPC followers work? Mod companions were awkward in Oblivion. They either made things too easy or got stuck/lost/confused and didn't help at all. Did Bethesda do a better job with their guys?
@ teina
Yes, I picked your avatar for a mod long ago as one of my characters has the same hair. Did a quick check in OBMM and found I currently have 116 mods active. Plenty are just fluff, but there are many I wouldn't dream of playing without.
