You didn't miss anything. You're just starting later, and with a bit of forewarning about some of the more frustrating aspects of the game.

The thread I got that pic from, there's one in glass in there. Thankfully that sort of thing doesn't seem to be nearly so prevalent as it was in Oblivion

I've had similar happen to me. I was wearing the Arch-mage robes, I had Argis the Bulwark with me in full Daedric, and this little Khajiit in fur armor tried mugging me. At what point would anyone thing that was a good idea?

I'm sure "what was I thinking?" crossed his mind after he was shouted off the mountain trail and over the cliff.

The random encounter thieves may wear "good" armor when you come across them (i.e., level scaled to some degree), but I think it's only those scripted sequences. Everything else, like bandits, seem to only scale within a limited range (up to steel, etc).
A sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.

I've not ran into a thief once yet, though a bounty hunter did rush up to me and demand, erm... zero septims.

Something I feel is a hell of a missed opportunity:

Isn't that the kind of thing that people praise The Witcher series for? (frequent/on-the-/fly moral decisions that have no clear "good" answer)

I ended up doing that too, only because I couldn't take on the squad I'd be up against otherwise, even with Lydia's help.

I'm not entirely sure that the Witcherverse (book in the books and the games) is really comparable to Tamriel either.

This mod probably won't last long.
It's too bad, as my fps went through the roof with it.

What mod was that, MWTH? It's already gone. Was it like the FO3 & NV ones that told the game you were running a strictly DX9 card to trick it into more performance?

Ah crap. It was funny too.
Was just a joke someone posted as a mod.

An ini tweak to improve graphics.
The comparison images were stuff like this.
