    GW2 Elementalist - Movement Control

    GW2 Elementalist - Movement Control

This is the place you need to come to, for every information you need to know about "Movement" of the Elementalist in Guild Wars 2.

    Pull Foe

At the current state of the game, the Elementalists have just one skill that allow him to draw a foe closer to him, while being stationary himself:
Magnetic Shield from the "Conjure Earth Shield" environmental weapon. Actually it is "foes" as the skill is not a single target skill, but draws all foes with the range. This can be used to PBAoE damage people, but it also makes it impossible to single out a foe like with the Thief's "Scorpion Wire", which also has a better range and is not tied to an environmental weapon.

    Featured skills:

    Move to Foe

The definition "leap", often still used, is a little bit misleading, as all movement that moves yourself towards a foe in a direct line, whether running or jumping or "phasing forward" was called a "leap" at some time in the past by ArenaNet. Because of that, I chose "Move to Foe", which is clear to understand. In the skill description you can also find "sprint ahead" or "advance forward".
Skills that move you directly forward in a burst of speed are: Burning Speed from the Fire Magic line and the aquatic Tidal Wave. Fiery Whirl and Fiery Rush which are skills from the "Conjure Fiery Greatsword" Elite also burst your Elementalist forward in a swift motion. Not listed is the skill "Ride the Lightning", which also moves you forward, but can be used to travel through the air as well, which the other four can't do.

    Combo Leap

Skills listed here actually are the combo finisher skills that can be used on fields created by other skills, like "Ring of Fire". The Elementalist has three skills that do the Combo Leaps: Magnetic Grasp (which is an undocumented feature), Flame Leap and Lightning Leap.

    Featured skills: - -

    Push

Push is an effect caused by some skills which physically pushes foes away from the player and interrupts them.

Push is the opposite of the pull effect and does the additional effect of and interrupt. The Elementalist has currently just one skill that creates this effect: Gust, which is skills #3 on the Staff weapon.
Before February 2012, this type of effect was called "knock back". Water Trident, Tidal Wave and Heat Wave once held that ability, but it was removed after the two last beta weekends in February & March. The Elementalist has lost a lot of its initial strength here. Unlike the Launch effect, featured next, Push does not ground a foe, which can advance immediately after the push back ends without having to stand up.

    Featured Skills:

    Launch

Launch is an effect caused by some skills which interrupts and tosses a foe backwards into the air and leaves them grounded.

Updraft, which also makes you do an evasive backwards jump, is the only normal weapon skill and from the Air Magic line (Off Hand Dagger), because Tornado, which also launches foes, is one of the elite skill transform skill bars - and very limited because of the long recharge. There is also Wind Blast, which is the #3 skill on the "Conjure Lightning Hammer" environmental weapon. Its range is limited to melee range as well as the Tornado effect.

    Featured skills: - -

    Retreat

Retreat is a technique used to roll or jump directly backwards.

Burning Retreat is the only "pure" retreat skill the Elementalist has, which of course is from the Fire Magic attunement. I am a little bit surprised that there is not at least one or even more skills to get away, for a low armour class like the Elementalist. In the February beta, more classes have gained this movement effect, especially the adventurer class professions. Perhaps to compensate for the lack of skill-related-movement, "Burning Retreat" also counts as an evasive move now. "Updraft" has its launch & boon functionality too, but is also listed.

    Featured skills: -

    Knockdown

Knockdown is an effect caused by some skills which interrupts and causes the foe to be unable to move or use skills for a short duration. Knocked down foes fall to the ground and take some time to get up again.

Knock downs are far less prominent in Guild Wars 2 so far than in GW1 and seem to be almost Warrior exclusive. With two knockdown skills, Gale (Focus), Earthquake (Off Hand Dagger). The Elementalist is the profession which takes third place (after the Guardian). With "Glyph of Concentration" the profession also had the only skill, that could prevent knockdowns. It was not available in the February beta any more. Meteor Shower (Staff) lost the knockdown ability during the March beta.

    Featured skills: -

    "Teleport"

Teleport is an effect which causes the user or target(s) to instantly move from one location to another.

Right now, I assume the difference between "Leap"+"Move to Foe" and "Teleport" is the fact that you do not need to flash directly ahead of you. The skills, Lightning Flash (Utility) and the aquatic Air Pocket are the only teleports the Elementalist has. Both skills have major drawbacks though. Air Pocket must be aimed in a direction in front of you first (you can swim the other way if you like after releasing the bubble) and Lightning Flash can not be used to reach a location above your current level and fails most of the time when you try to cross a gap that requires jumping.

    Featured skills: -

    Float

Float is an underwater effect caused by some skills which forces the affected target(s) to move towards the surface.

Actually, Air Bubble is the only "not downed" aquatic skill in-game so far that causes enemies to move away towards the surface. No other profession can do that. With Steam Vent the Elementalist can float himself to the surface and escape death.

    Featured skills: -

    Sink

Sink is an underwater effect caused by some skills which forces the affected target(s) to move away from the surface.

As with the float effect, the Elementalist joins the rank of professions with very few skills. Rock Anchor is one of them and since the 3rd BWE Undercurrent got it too, although it was still not included in the description. A few other classes do not have a sink spell at all.

    Featured skills: -

There are not many surprises about movement altering effects when the Elementalist is fighting on land. Other professions can do most of the things more often than him, but the Elementalist has a limited, but wide variety to chose from, which adds a lot to his versatility.
Beneath the waves, the Elementalist is the master of movement control skills and able to separate dangerous foes from team mates or himself with the float & sink abilities.
If you take into account the conditions he can cause (cripple, chilled, immobilize) or grant (swiftness), a good Elementalist can do even more to movement that meets the eyes on a first glance.

With the Mesmer reveal last week, it looks like that profession will have quite a few skills for movement control and teleportation, so the Ele is likely to lose its leading edge at that ability. We will have to see if the Mesmer will be as versatile as the Ele, because he might lack the skills to cause conditions that augment the pure mobility skills.

I will try to get this thread up to date after the changes that have been made at the March 2012 beta weekend. Have a little patience or help me speed up the process by reporting things that have changed in the "Dust Devil"-Thread.

This thread finally got an overhaul and is up to date.

The first info graphic has been updated and the "beta" icons removed. I also removed the tables (which is better for Tapatalk reader on mobile devices", because after the icons where gone, there was no reason to keeping them.
