Right now on Getjar you can get Tapatalk for free, totally legit, with updates as they're released.
As far as I know it's only for this week, so jump on it while you can.
There's a roundabout way to get the Getjar app, since I can't find a direct link. But regardless:
1. On your phone, load the browser of your choice, and go to m.getjar.com
2. Click on any app on the list, it doesn't matter which, and once that page loads, click download. (You won't be installing it, don't worry.)
3. A new page loads and should prompt you to download/install getjar.apk. Do that.
4. Load up the Getjar app.
5. Search for Tapatalk.
6. Install!
The latest version of Tapatalk (1.13.5) is pretty damn nice, I must say. Viewing an image is now possible without wanting to throw your phone across the room. Quotes now include the author of the quoted post, and you can tap on the link to go to their post, as you can on a browser. It's like I don't even need a laptop anymore!

edit: iPhone users - if you haven't been able to upgrade from your iPhone yet, then unfortunately you have to go through Apple's own App Store, as Apple disallows anything that's from a third party (unless you jailbreak your phone and install pirated apps, which of course voids the warranty). The link is here: http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/tapat...307880732?mt=8 It's $3, which is slightly on the expensive side for an app (I typically only see media player apps that high), but it is a rather useful thing. Naturally though, your purchases won't carry over to the Android Market, so keep that in mind if you're really cheap (like I obviously am, or I wouldn't have posted how to get it for free).
GetJar has a few other nice apps on it for free under the premium section too. I stocked up on quite a few two weeks ago.
I'm suspicious about keeping the GetJar app on my tablet personally - but it's not doing anything bad just now so hey ho!

You probably can't get updates after deleting Getjar? You mentioned notifications but not the updates itself.
So this is apparently NOT for iPhone users.
Well, the updates would go through the Getjar app, so the app would be like 'Hey there's an update!' and you'd be all 'Oh okay!'. But without the app there's no notifications and no app to go through to update. Maybe it's possible to reinstall Getjar and have it pick up that you have some of their apps installed, and receive updates again that way. I'm honestly not sure.
Oh, iPhone, that sucks. I guess I forgot about them since they're quite rare to see these days, at least IRL. I'll add a note to the first post I guess.
When is your contract up?
iPhone you can't download anything that Apple doesn't want you to, unless you jailbreak.
When going to m.getjar.com I got a prompt to install the getjar app. Saved a step.
I just started a new one last month. Just got the 4S. It doesn't matter though, I probably wasn't going to use it anyway...just was going to snag it while it was free. I don't check the forums from my phone as it is.
Besides, I will never own a Crackberry, and I have no interest in Androids, lol.
I know, I'm on my second one. And I'm obviously not jailbreaking it, nor am I going to spend $2.99 on an app I'll probably never use.
Well, can't find Tapatalk in the Getjar app or the site. If someone could maybe link to the app please?
