What I find kinda sad though is the pandering.
Almost all of the anti-SOPA protesting sites include in their statements something like "Fighting internet piracy is important, but...". Problem is that that just isnt true (as showed by independent study after independent study). So why do they say it? I can only think of one reason, and that is that they dont want to piss off big media way too much. Which will of course come back and bite them in the behinds.
Because what will happen?
Wait until a more "moderate" law is suggested, then big media will go "But you AGREED! You said fighting piracy is IMPORTANT! Look at the COMPROMISES we made, you HAVE to accept it now!"

I have to admit, I don't really believe that we can compare a world with vs without piracy. Piracy works via the web, everyone is affected, it'd be hard to imagine how our would be if piracy didn't exist.
Piracy is not just reduced income from sales, but also free publicity, try before you buy, enhanced distribution, retaliation against DRM, etc. It's hard to tell whether the benefits outweight the costs. For example, perhaps without piracy the distribution networks would feel more compelled to expand to areas where distribution problems exist.

Piracy will never, ever go away.

Piracy will go away when it's made obsolete.
Meanwhile, I was questioning those studies, as I don't believe we have a decent control condition to compare with.

I find it hilarious that they get so up in arms about streaming. Watching a show with a few friends on the internet is ILLEGAL AS ALL GET OUT but inviting them over to watch it is totes legal.
****ing dumb.
Fighter: Why are these people sleeping?
Black Mage: Er uh. Because they are tired?
Fighter: Why are these people on fire?
Black Mage: Ah.. Um. They were cold?
I just watched the double-posted video. Weird how poignant the chorus is.
It won't, though. I'd use rogue streaming sites less if legal streams were more accessible (or accessible at all - looking at you, Dexter), but piracy as a whole becoming obsolete? That's like expecting people to stop stealing cars.

Funny thing is that we can compare a world with no internet piracy to a world with. It is called going back to before internet.
Earnings (both mean and total) for the copyright creators in all sectors has gone up over the last decade, in perfect unison with the piracy numbers. If there is a correlation it is a positive one; more piracy and bigger earnings go hand in hand. The only thing that has gone down is distributors' earnings (CD printers etc), but that would be the same regardless (unless internet as a distribution channel was abolished completely, and I don't think anyone wants that).
