I'm also a decent shot with a bow, so long as I can continue to wear glasses in this grim future.
A sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.

I live at home with my kid. So I can cook, wash dishes, wash clothes, clean the apartment. Well, in theory.
I can also teach tricks to dogs. My husky/lab mix is pretty well trained. Not for survival mind you, she'd be fairly useless I think. But I can train dogs if there's a need for it.

You can tell the quality of life of people by what they complain about
I'd be screwed.
If you need kindergarden teachers, you will need a high school teacher for the older kids too! You have got to take me, not because I am one, but I also have a degree in biology, which might be useful when trying to find food supplies or you need an assistant for manufacturing the gunpowder you have talked about earlier, as I have worked in a lab during university years.
I am certified lifeguard, which might be useful, as we are living on an island and water is all around us. People have to learn to swim. I can not shoot a firearm, but friends tell me I am pretty good with a bow without training. I guess I will be a great marksman with some training. If anybody needs to fend off attackers I am useful as well, having been a regional champion in judo in my youth and having done karate & jiu-jitsu as well. When the catastrophe hit Earth I probably salvaged some things from my apartment and will be armed with sword, lance, dagger & chain mail (which I made myself & know how to create more with propper materials). When the plan with gunpowder & guns fails, I am the closest thing to a knight you can get to man your walls and keep foes off your back. You might not want to solve your problems with violence? You have to take me too, because I was a guidance counsellor in my school for many years. Someone who can talk an enraged teenager into giving up his cellphone to a fellow teacher has got to be a part of your community.

Im certified to handle any kind of dangerous radioactive material, which might come in handy when running a nuclear power plant.
Im also a physicist and therefore know how the plant works.
Im a teacher and can teach kids of any age up till around 20 in english, math, physics, biology, chemistry and history.
Im a good cook.
I have a somewhat extensive knowledge of medical herbs. As well as edible and poisonous fungi.
I am an excellent marksman and knows how to make bows and arrows. And im a proficient fisherman.
for one i am really good in inventing stuff, like weapons to fend off problem makers or make some kind of device to recycle raining water to fresh water.
i bet you only have a door to keep away problem makers, throwing stones doesn't really work and staying inside is only lowering the food supply.
i will not say i am a professional but i do know some nice survival tricks, even have ways to create guns with pressure and hand crafted bullets.
I will haunt you so hard if you don't let me in.
You'll wake up and uh oh that chair got TOTALLY FLIPPED.
beware!
Fighter: Why are these people sleeping?
Black Mage: Er uh. Because they are tired?
Fighter: Why are these people on fire?
Black Mage: Ah.. Um. They were cold?
Thinking about this, what I need first off is bodies. Live ones. Going to need to send out parties, as many as possible, to find/loot as much of anything that can be found and brought back to the stronghold. Find cars, trucks, towtrucks, and fuel. Petrol, diesel, kerosene. Find tankers, fill them with petrol, and bring 'em back. Raid the supermarkets (food!) and drug stores (drugs! especially antibiotics), liquor stores (booze! good for drinking and trading), hardware stores (tools yo!), sporting goods shops (guns! ammo! bows, arrows, fishing equipment, rope, etc.), feed/pet shops (animal food, grain for planting, etc.). Bring everything back that isn't going to be made anymore for a long, long time. Everything! Plastic bags, wrapping paper, cat food, disposable lighters (these will be especially valuable, find all of them you can), etc. etc.
Find a library and get all the books you can, especially the ones that tell you how to do stuff, how to make stuff.
Bring me stuff.

i would personally never bang on such a door, i would be better of doing it by my self.
food is as scarce as i make it, enemies barely to never go for the one man places since it's mostly not worth it, i never have fights because someone screws up the survival plan inside, etc....
there are plenty of weapons in my house to keep a truckload of ppl away so i am armed, food can be a problem but since i am alone they can't exploit the human weakness whether i can, compassion to others.
it's a cruel world when things don't go the way we're used to, i learned kinda how life is in fallout so a wasteland world is not so strange.
never bin in one my self, do know the routine.
Your choice, sorudo. Wandering the lands like the poor scurvy dudes in The Road, or being a part of a community growing its own food and rebuilding. Both have their appeal, but only one offers real protection and security. Also, it's all fine when you're by yourself, but what if you have a family?
