Post Paying for armor Repair is now part of Death Penalty

    Hi

In response to some feedback, Martin K posted the following.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Morning.

Let me explain what is actually happening.

Every time you get defeated (so after you have been downed and failed to rally) one piece of your armor gets damaged. Once all your armor pieces are damaged, they will break - and you will have to repair or replace it.

It is very different from a durability system other games use, as you cannot avoid being hit by opponents - but you can avoid getting defeated by skilled play.

So if you never get defeated, you will never have to repair a single piece of armor.

Hope that helps, we have a blogpost about it coming soon that will get into more details.

and then in response to further comments

    One important thing:

Stop thinking in GW terms when thinking about "dying". GW did not have a Downed State.

We have been testing this system for quite a while now, it feels very natural when actually playing and not just theorizing about it (And yes, I know that you all would rather play then theorize, we are working on it ).

To answer another question: Armor pieces do not get destroyed, they just become useless unless you repair them.

There will be a blog entry later on that describes the mechanic in more detail.

i just hope repairing is not going to be to expensive, hate to have no chance of any gold at all because of all the "deaths"
it's alive but cannot be living, it's dead but lives a mortal life.

This can easily cause quite the backslash. Have to see how they explain it further.

Because redundancy is my forte, I will repeat what I said in Guru even though it is probably meaningless to protest at this point:

    Wow, that really sucks Anet.

What did happen to all that talk about "dying is enough of a penalty"? It sounds like a really inconvenient mechanic if the demos are anything to go by. Not to mention those versions of the events were scaled down. Characters will likely die frequently in mid to high-end Dynamic events so ideally we'd have to be repairing armor every time we get sent back to a way point in order to be helpful in an event. Was this game really hurting that much for an additional money sink?

At least if you don't die, you don't have to pay for anything.

Actually from what i've been reading, this is the replacement to the Potion system.

Before the potions were there as an energy resource and money sink, the less effectively you fought, the more potions you had to use, so the more you had to buy. The incentive being to play better and manage your energy pool better to use less potions, therefore less cost.

This is the same thing in essence, in other MMO's your armor gets damaged just from fighting, even if you never die once in other MMO's, you still repair your gear every so often due to wear and tear.

With this system though it only gets damaged if you keep dying, so again it seems to be an incentive to learn how to play better, the way Martin's post reads, the armor only becomes redundant once ALL the pieces break, so that would mean about 6 defeats or so roughly.

The only thing so far that does concern me though is that we may have to go back to town to repair the equipment.

So in that regard I'm hoping we can loot and buy Repair kits so we can repair the gear ourselves while out in dungeons, World Vs World or general exploration.

Arena net have done a fantastic job getting rid of skill trainers and such to make it so we don't have to go back to towns to buy a new skill once we reach the right level, i have faith that they have done this so we wont have to go back to town to repair the equipment, cause nothing would suck more than spending an hour with a group trying to get through a dungeon, only for us to all have to quit at the end cause everyone's Armour broke....

So I'm going to reserve judgement till the blog entry detailing it appears, but i've had faith in Anet since day one, and that faith still remains.

Best method imo is loot-able and buy-able Repair kits for repairing on the go / In town repairers for when you go back at the end of your exploration and want to "Top up" your Armour, and a self repair via a crafting profession, so you can repair it for free yourself ( As long as you have the materials to repair it, plus you get points to crafting too! xD)

That's my two copper on the matter, gonna wait for this blog post to decide properly, but i don't think this is as bad as it initially sounded imo.

^ I don't think armor repair will be in PvP/WvW.

I wouldn't think it would be in the balanced 5 Vs 5 PvP, but there is always a chance it could make it into World Vs World, i mean enemy players drop gold, weapons and armor as well as give experience in WvW, and there are NPC races wandering around in there too so World Vs World is essentially PvE......just with other players you can kill....if that makes sense.

While Balanced PvP has just the 5 Vs 5 and no other enemy's / NPC's and such.

So i could be wrong, but i would kinda expect this to carry over into WvW, just not the main balanced PvP setups.

Hopefully it won't be in WvW. Deaths come more readily in any sort of PvP.

I'm probably wrong (I hope so, since after that Blog earlier this week about WvW just reaffirmed my desire to play WvW ALOT!)

But if they say in this upcoming post that it applies in WvW as well i wouldn't be surprised, but i do hope I'm wrong on that front, WvW will be ALOT more fun without having to keep repairing gear or leaving to go to town to repair it.

Plus WvW will be just damn unpredictable in terms of player numbers, wouldn't be fair to have to keep repairing stuff cause some players kept ganging up on you.
