It would probably be a good idea to have a character with your account name, just to block someone else from taking it (and use it to give you a bad rep or scamming). Unless char names is an extra layer of security of course (although I doubt it will be needed for GW2, at least I really really hope not)
And names are locked per account afaik (the same way as names are locked in GW1, so even deleted chars' names are locked if the name is used for guild roster etc.). What is not known though is for how long the grace period is. Forever?

I just made a long list of alternatives.

Pfft, there are too many ways to make a name with Alaris in it for me to worry about covering all names so people don't give me a bad rep. All we can really do is get the names we care to have characters for.

Yes, you have Alaris as some kind of family name. But I don't have a family name and would be very unhappy indeed if somebody would (mis)use my name!

I imagine the grace period will be more than a month. Plenty of time for you to get GW2 and make your characters.
Btw, Alaris works more as a given name than a family name. I have yet to work out how that works in lore, but I don't assume that my characters are related by blood. It's mainly to make it easier to recognize me in-game as well as in the forum.

I used Kendred as a surname in GW 1. I never thought it out like "My characters are related to each other," just used it so guildies could keep track of me.

Yea, I do not currently use "Lensor" as a part of my GW1 character names, but will surely make one called that in GW2 (not as main character, just as a name holder). Not that I think anyone would want to create a character called that, but you never know. Better safe than sorry and all that.![]()

I don't want a char called just Alaris. That would be weird, like as if that char is more main than my other mains. No thanks.
Just to be safe, I've made new chars with names I might want to have, and I am currently getting them to EotN so they can unlock the HoM.
I hope it's overkill, but eh, you never know.
