East coast represent, what whaaat.
Well, the title of your thread is "The End is Near" loli more so said if this does happen. i didnt say it was GOING to happen but the odds of another natural disaster over there and the possibility of it screwing up whats left is high.
Sorry, I meant the articles you originally posted as being from anti-nuclear.also since when is Berkeley an anti nuclear site? lol.
I've posted this a lot, but a guy in Japan already invented that. I don't know why it isn't being used (if it's not feasible on a grand scale or if it's just being squashed because it would kill the oil industry), but I definitely think it should be a priority, especially since fossil fuels aren't renewable and we don't even know the HALF LIFE on plastics.
No, it isn't. Actually, there are far more safeguards in typical nuclear installations than you'll find in any other energy-producing technology.
Given the current popular outlook on carbon footprints and hydrocarbon hate in general, I'd say that fossil fuels and industrial pollution account for 99% of the planet's present humankind-caused woes, none of it from nuclear energy.

That's awesome, and it sounds very simple :o
The last few years they've started collecting plastic seperately from normal trash where I live, I just looked it up and apparently they make new plastic products out of it so that's okay I guess (might be even better than making oil which would be burned).
So, let's see, we have mass destruction in December because a cycle in the Mayan calendar ends. We also have global warming. Now, we have nuclear radiation killing us all. Do we have anything else to add to that list? Any asteroids coming pretty close to us any time soon? How about alien invasions, we have no way of knowing when that will happen until they get close enough to our satellites, and for all we know, they are already here...waiting.
In fact, as far as nuclear radiation is concerned, I'm not worried about some radiation from a Japanese power plant when I live probably 20-30 miles from Three Mile Island (here in Pennsylvania). That sucker nearly had a meltdown in '79. I'm pretty sure they are prepared for the worst now though. But let's see...nuclear radiation from thousands of miles away? Or the possibility of a meltdown less than 50 miles away? And you know what, I trust TMI will keep things under control.
As far as all the doomsayers, call me when something is actually GOING to happen.
I can't wait for fusion to actually become a feasible source of energy.

I think it's fair to demand safety. And accountability. And question authority.
We just need to be practical and reasonable about it.

I don't see that becoming terribly feasible any time soon, though there are computer simulations that seem to work. The problem is containing the plasma; no normal Earthly matter can withstand those temperatures, though we may find a way to create a magnetic field that will.
But. We already have a very viable working fusion generator in the center of our solar system. All we need is a way to use it efficiently. I'm thinking Dyson sphere or a Ringworld. Or a really long extension cord.

Of course. And this is where my conspiracy-theory gland starts to twitch, because I know that there have been serious technological advancements in solar-panels as well as storage-battery efficiency, and for some reason those advancements seem to disappear and/or come to nothing.

Yeah, this is what bugs me whenever someone talks about creating fusion energy. Why recreate the wheel when it's right there waiting for us, ok yeah it's a ways away but that just means it won't kill us.
Indeed, got to love them.
Idk what you're referring to exactly, but I bought a solar panel for $50 that keeps my car battery charged, from what I've heard it can keep a battery running indefinitely. If I owned a home I'd be buying solar panels for all of my energy. If only more businesses and apartment complexes made use of them, energy would be a lot less problematic I think. At least I AM seeing more solar panels scattered around, so some people are starting to realize solar panels are becoming cost effective now.
