And by that, I'm just curious, how many of you have played a thief for a significant amount of time, and completely forgotten about that steal skill just floating right above the skill bar? I'll admit that when I was playing mine over the latest BWE, I probably stole something twice over the course of 8 hours.

I played PvP thief a bit, and I didn't even try to steal hahah! I was too busy being bad at it in so many other ways...

I used the "steal" as an initial shadowstep towards the enemy when using Sword & Dagger. Most of the time, I did not look at what ability the steal granted me, I just used it thinking "it will help me somehow".
That pretty much makes me a bad thief, I guess.

This thread has me curious as thief is a prof I shall try when the game is released, but not before.

thief is hard as hell to play
I use Steal often, but I'm never sure what it's going to do until after the fact. Some of the effects are quite powerful; I think I'll get better at them once I know what everything steals to. For example the feather blind one isn't that exciting, but it can be a lot more useful than I'm using it by just using it immediately.
I felt pretty terrible when I finally realized that the cluster bomb on the short bow could be detonated...that only took me a beta and a half.

On second thought, I think you could be a good thief without stealing. Especially if using ranged attacks...

Only if your necro wears the body as soon as he snatches it, because then it's identity theft!
I would say don't feel too bad about not utilizing the skill. It's not an essential mechanic by any definition of the term, and I see it more as a way of adding some additional flair to the class. Do the developers expect you to remember just what each and every enemy and their stolen "skills" do? Of course not! And for anyone who prefers purely ranged combat, trying to steal would put them into harms way, even if for a moment.
