Many of you know me as Quintus Antonius, founder and former leader of Blade and Rose, and Loremaster Emeritus of GWO.
You may also be familiar with another long time member who goes by the IGN "Riunne Annuvasa", real name--Megan.
What you may not know is that Megan and I are an IRL couple. Today we are announcing our engagement, but how this engagement came to be may be of interest to this community because it involves a game we all know and love—Guild Wars.
Megan and I met online in 8th grade (over a decade ago), and a major part of our online relationship prior to dating IRL was Guild Wars 1. I am from PA and she is from CA, so we had a long distance between us, which Guild Wars helped us midigate by giving us something we could do together despite our distance.
In college, Megan came to PA to attend college and we began to date, still loyal fans of Guild Wars. Well, because we are both gamer-geeks and because of GW’s contribution to our relationship, I decided to propose to her in a very Guild Wars fashion.
Being the nerd I am, I couldn’t just kneel down with a stupid little ring box and pop the question. No, this had to be done in true gamer-geek fashion!
What you are looking at is a Rytlock/“Charrlie” plushie I ordered from Penny Arcade. Around it’s neck I tied the engagement ring with a ribbon made of string.
To this ribbon I affixed a tag that reads the following:
“LFG 4 Life (1/2)”.
While I had to explain this to my non-gamer friends and family, you all obvious can decipher what I mean. Looking for group for life, need one more! A call back to all those days sitting in Tyria looking for a PUG. This group of one needed one more to make two!
I managed to get a picture of her just as she realized what exactly was going on. At first she thought that Charrlie was the one looking for the group (i.e. it was a gift), but nope, it was me.
Here’s the ring:
And the happy couple, with Charrlie sneaking in of course!:
The power of Guild Wars lies in its ability to connect people and maintain those connections, something very few other games can claim to do. While others may wonder why we blow time, energy, and money into a game, those of us who have made Guild Wars a part of our lives know the power it has. So as Quintus Antonius and Riunne Annuvasa celebrate our engagement, we invite you to celebrate with us.
Thanks ANet, NCSoft, Guild Wars, and the entire community for sharing in the moment with us. Maybe we can have an in-game wedding to match our real life one next year.
