Personally I turn on notifications of updates, so I can decide which ones to install. Most updates do actually fix stuff, even if you don't see their effect (mostly security exploits).
This.
It's one thing to be notified about updates, that's fine. It's another thing completely that Windows suddenly decide that it's time to slow down your computer to a crawl, followed by 50 billion popups about how it's time to reboot, while you are trying to play some game.

I happily use OS2. Now that's a real operating system.
I've tried installing the updates one by one, but none of them install regardless. On a lot of websites they actually recommend not to use the system restore function as a means of undoing a Windows Update. So I'm totally confused. Will this help, or mess up my laptop even further? And yes, it is a legal version of Home Edition.
Hmm, I have never had that issue with any of my windows 7 machines, but I use ultimate on both of them so maybe there's something different somewhere.
Have you tried contacting Microsoft customer service? You do have your license number as a proof of ownership after all.

Maybe harniq means that all versions of Windows except Windows 3.1 are illegitimate offspring?
