I think bears are the staple choice because they're sort of tanks. Not sure where they can be tamed, I don't remember where I found mine...

I try to use the wolf more often than not just because that's what my character is SUPPOSED to use, but I find that he dies so quickly... I recently found a Arctodus, which I think is going to be my main pet. He's kind of a beast.

Oh, that site shows where you can find bears, too.

I use my stalker (Poes stayed with the whole 250 years! she must be a goddess walking amongst mere mortals too..) and I like the boar. Always fun to see those centaurs knocked back

Since you get two pets, I would bring a ranged pet with me, so that I do not have to send it in potentially deadly territory. The charr's devourer for example was a nice pick for that. I don't know what other pets are ranged...

I don't know if that's an effective strategy though, I have not played ranger much yet.

yeah I have a forest spider (boris) who tends to be ranged most of the time and swap between the two, I also like the idea of taming a bird of some sort as well just to see the difference in combat

    Pigs are superior, of course!

I have a pig from LA. And a spider from GW1 as a ranged pet in case my pig gets killed.

Armor fish (from LA) and Jellyfish (from GW1/LA) for underwater combat.

Hm... actually... no, they are not ranged! According to wiki they have one skill that is not ranged. Which I did not know...

But - pigs are superior! My pig never dies, so I don't need ranged pet!
