Level 65 fractal thieves using pistols.

Doesn't even have dual guardians so don't make that excuse.
edit: two of them, both using dual pistols at points.

Okay? They're still bad, comparatively speaking. Similarly, if you want to play a necro minion master you certainly can, but a condition build outshines it in every way.
edit: lol at the guardian dying five seconds into the fight.

Can they really be that bad and still people get all the way to level 65 fractals with them?

He's saying that they could be better. Sometimes players are better than their builds, and people mistake that for being a good build, when actually is that they're good players. It's a different thing.
Point being, if they decided to use a better weapon set (whatever it might be) they'd end up being more effective overall.

But are good results enough to get to level 65 fractals?

Just did Twilight Arbor twice with lvl 69-70 necro, first minion-master, then wells-mancer. We ripped through foes really fast. I'd like to think my nuking conditions had something to do with this, but ... I don't know.
Anyway, people can do crazy stuff, but if we're going to judge effectiveness... we need to have some way of measuring effectiveness. Subjective impressions are... subjective.

I know you're joking, but anything is not possible. Repair canisters can help a struggling team finish off the last of a fractal level, but if you can't kill something, all the repair canisters in the world won't help. Agony is a death sentence at that level and monsters regen when you break combat.
There is a certain amount of competency required to get to level 65. At some point you have to say, "ok it doesn't matter if they bought 400 dollars worth of gems, they still made it to level XX(X)."
