hi there, after a long long break from guild wars i'll play it again. I decided to go with monk since i already have damage dealers (ranger, elem), any tips for a good secondary profession?
i like ele or rit for secondary on a monk. of course, it only matters near the beginning since you can change your secondary once you ascend. i like ele for e-management (mostly for glyph of lesser energy) - so that's what i went with on my monk.
For general purpose PvE, /E is the secondary of choice. Just for Glyph of Lesser Energy as people have said. You don't really want to use the secondary to take away the main purpose of your monk - to heal / prot / generally stop the team from dirtnapping. so GoLE works nicely.
/A /W, /P, /Me all have their specialised uses, mainly in PvP and PvPvE. When you do more stuff, you'll generally unlock all secondaries so really it's not that big of a deal. But yeah, I'd go with /E just for the GoLE :)

I usually end up not using skills from other professions, but when I do, it's usually for GoLE. Other than that, I may use some of the hex removals in mesmer lines (using inspired hex in Grand Court of Sebelkeh comes to mind), or assassin factions PvE skill shadow sanctuary for oh-s*** button if I'm in need of one.
For the most part, there is no reason for a PvE monk to use secondary skills. Other than just messing around, probably the only "legitimate" reason to run a skill from the secondary is if your partner monk uses UA, then you can use
Core
Arcane Mimicry
60
2
15
Spell. For 20 seconds, Arcane Mimicry becomes the non-Form Elite skill from target other ally.
to steal it and keep it on you.
Some people use GoLE as mentioned, but unless you're running something silly like heal party, you won't be able to make use of it (you save 5e on spirit bond, whoopdy doo! )
Edit: I'm talking about being the most efficient monk possible, but that isn't necessary for PvE. If you feel like having firestorm on your monk, by all means, feel free.

just for information, at it's base GoLE saves you 10e, so spirit bond would be free. so would 5e skills actually, but like you said it's less efficient in those cases.
Remember that GoLE affects 2 spells, saving maximum of 15e. PS (10e) + SB (10e) = total 20e, for example would be GoLE (5e) + PS (10e-10e) + SB (10e-10e) = total 5e.
The downside of GoLE is cast time, since sometimes that 1s is crucial.
