In 2006, WoW would be seen as a spinoff from the Warcraft games. It would still be successful of course, but it would be nowhere near the giant it is now.
I doubt it. Guild Wars would likely have sold more if it had been released before WoW, but at the same time Blizzard's game let more people know about MMORPGs in general; how many times we see here the speech "I was a WoW player and now I'm looking for a new MMORPG"? (Although most of the time, those players are looking for mounts*, crafting Über Sword of E-Peen Mastery, and etc)
Blizzard has simply too many fanboys. If they had released WoW today, it would still cause as many ripples as throwing a meteor in a lake.
(*Funny fact about mounts: thanks to players' requests, NCSoft is going to add mounts to Aion. Aion, the game in which players are actually able to fly without any kind of mount. I guess sheep players are sheep.)

Obvious person-who-hasn't-played-Aion-before is obvious.

I did play it. Mounts don't make sense in that game, given how the characters themselves already have wings; between adding mounts so people can move faster in the no-fly zones (or for longer in the flying zones), it would be far smarter to allow people to glide longer or even fly longer.

Ha! If you think that's bad, consider the (to me) completely incomprehensible desire for non-game-related-things to do in-game.
What, mining? Seriously? That's what you want to do in a game? "Regular" farming (in game terms) is bad enough without bring actual crops into it... "Crafts" of that sort is one thing I *really* hope aren't a part of GW2. It wouldn't quite be deal-breaking, but it would be serious negative points to be required to man a pick for hours to get anywhere - even if only economically.

Seriously? Don't you remember how it was in 2004? Everyone expected EverQuest II to be the success of the decade. And everyone was waiting to make their own EQII clone. It was right at the brink, when the public view of MMOs were formed; if WoW had been delayed, you'd see people making speeches like "I was a EQII player and now I'm looking for a new MMORPG".
WoW has acted like a "safe haven" for many players. They play WoW as standard, and whenever something new appears on the market, they go try that, and then they go back to WoW. If something else had come before it, then that other game would be what they'd go back to. As for Blizzard's huge fan base, they deserve it, but it would be much smaller if it wasn't for WoW.
And of course, WoW as you say set a standard in many peoples' minds of how an MMO should be. If WoW had been delayed and EQII failed? GW would present its free-to-play business model, and Blizzard would find it much harder to attract customers since people would think that that's not how MMOs were supposed to be ran (or rather, WoW would likely be f2p as well).

The way you worded it made it seem as if you thought people could fly anywhere in the game, at any time. Rather than mounts they should just increase the places you're allowed to fly in outside of the abyss.
Oh and getting that 33% faster flying skill a lot earlier would be nice too.

I thought EQ2 was not well received? I've been reading old Penny Arcade stuff and they were bashing the soulless graphics of EQ2.
I haven't really followed games that closely, so I really hesitate to say too much on whether you're right or not, but it seems to me that WOW really got a lot of things right about this genre or it wouldn't be as popular as it is. There are a lot of people who really enjoy the micro-reward system that WOW does so well. Look at all the PVE people who have come to dominate GWs for that matter (myself among them). This was a game that they thought they had designed to lead people into PVP upon conclusion. Was there ever a time when the majority of GWs players were into PVP?
It's possible that someone else could have released a game as good as WOW, but wouldn't we have seen it by now? Guild Wars is quite a bit different than WOW. I don't think there have been that many MMORPGs released in the last 5 years or so that come anywhere near to the depth and polish of WOW. GWs, and I've played almost nothing but this for the last 3.5 years, just doesn't offer the same kind of play experience you get from WOW.

I think the flying-longer thing would be more useful...it really disappointed me in the beta how short flight time was.
