I looked and didn't find anything on this, so I'm hoping I'm not doing a repeat thread.
A fellow guildie showed me something very interesting that you can see while looking at the cemetery in the Abbey from the outside. It looks almost just like the spirits that Ritualists can spawn, only without the chains. And this spirit appears to be holding a protective icon.
When I went inside the Abbey and looked around where the spirit had been standing, I didn't see anything unusual. Has anyone else seen this? Any theories as to why it's there?
I hadn't seen or heard of it before, but I just went in game to check and can confirm it's definitely there. Green spirit without chains, standing next to the tall monument nearest the Dwayna statue. I've gone inside the Abbey and there's no sign of any inscriptions on that monument or anything distinctive about the ground there.
Yep, people have known about him/her/it for a long time. There was some speculation early on that the spirit was supposed to be akin to a banshee or some other harbinger of impending doom.
The idea was that this guy is manifesting in the graveyard because it knows that something horrific (yon Searing) is approaching fast. Think of him as a kind of warning I guess.
At least, that's what people came up with a couple years ago (might have been on another forum though... I can't recall at this point).
Seen him when I was taking screenshots in pre-sear a while back, still wonder what he's doing there.
Maybe a priest's spirit who refuses to leave the mortal plains and has now turned into a banshee? :P

An interesting thought, but why would a harbinger of impending doom be carrying a protective icon.
The friend who'd shown me said that he'd been told that it's been around a while now, so that's why I was hoping to find old threads about it.
I wondered if it might have something to do with the catacombs being so close by.
Been known for a long while, no explanation has ever been revealed...I'm willing to side with the idea that it's a harbinger of impending doom, because I can't think of any other reason for it to be there.
I suppose that's probably the best explanation we can get really, the harbinger theory, since there's nothing on the monuments or the ground to indicate anything particular about it.
I often like to just recklessly throw thoughts in there...
Also remember Mragga, the Demon-Spirit of the same form that devours souls. We know Mragga can conceal itself, and has also devoured the souls of at least one Ascalonian in the past (Agostin of Ascalon's Chosen). It could be that.
The original thread on the subject, from way back when. Complete with many theories on the origins.
