Greetings with Questions.

Hello everyone.

Just dropping in to say hello, and that I feel utterly swamped by this game lol.

As an ex WoW refuge (please don't throw rocks) having spent an evening just messing around making a few random characters, I can honestly say I have no idea what to do.

I went out and purchased Nightfall because I thought to myself "gee a dervish would be fun to play". Of course a few hours and many characters later it turns out I want to play either a Ranger or an Elementalist.

With the whole Primary/Secondary profession aspect of this game, and the PvE or PvP focus. I really don't know what to do. Which character to level, how to build said character etc etc.

I know I want to play through Nightfall, focus on PvE, and then go through Prophecies and Factions in turn.

I'd like to be able to play solo(heroes/henchmen), yet still have viability in a group.

Setting things aflame, or peppering foes with arrows both highly appeal to me.

If anyone could make some suggestions, or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Well it looks like to me you narrowed your primary professions to either elementalist or ranger. Not that there's nothing wrong with having a slot for each profession - I do heh.

Anyway keep in mind you can change secondary professions at will after you've passed a certain point in a chapter. So I'd not fret too much about secondary professions since they are changeable.

I'd recommend to take time to play out at least one chapter's storyline to get a feeling for the PvE game. Along the way you will be able to access PvP arenas so you can play in those while taking a break from PvE game.

PvE play is useful for acquiring skills while levelling. Once you're at lvl 20, you could PvP to acquire balthazar factions to unlock skills for your PvP slots. Your PvE characters will have to purchase those skills from a skill trainer, however.

I don't want to confuse you further so bottom line for now I'd recommend do PvE storyline to at least get yourself familiarized with the game and with skills. Not much you can do for PvP play right which is considered the endgame by some unless you purchase skill unlock pack (which I don't recommend but shrug that's my opinion).

As for "viability" - don't worry too much about that. Elementalists are usually more than welcome in parties due to their firepower potential and smart players often welcome a Ranger due to what they can do.

Just take time to explore various builds and become familiar with possible roles each primary profession can fulfill.

Feel free to look me up at Sarak Layghlin anytime in-game, I probably can be more constructive and I also do have two low level Nightfall characters.

One of the Good Ideas in GW is that you can respec at will in towns and outposts. Early in the game you can change your attribute point allocations and skills, and later you can even switch secondary professions at will.

As for what to do... you should have 4 or more character slots, so go ahead and make your ranger or ele, or even an R/E. Play through nightfall and every other campaign you own (PvE) at least once before you try PvP.

For your goal of setting things on fire and peppering them with arrows, ranger is probably best. There are several ranger skills that induce burning, after all, and one even sets up to 3 or 4 foes on fire at once. Ele's do light things on fire better and are usually easier to get a group in, but rangers are more versatile and aren't bad for finding groups either. For your build... well you don't have many choices at first for skills, so just do whatever you can from no more then 3 attribute lines. R/Mo, R/E, E/Mo, or E/Me are my recommendations though there are valid builds for just about every combination of professions.

Another important point about GW is that it is entirely a party-based game. There are a few solo builds for farming, but any actual gameplay is done in a group. Builds that work in a hero/hench (H/H) group will also be fine for a "real" group, and (again) you can switch builds at will. There aren't any professions that work with h/h but not with real people.

Thanks for the replies.

Still not sure if I want to run E/Me or R/E.

It's great that you cleared up the whole H/H build vs "real" people build.

Once I figure out the character mess it'll be less to worry about.

Thanks for all the advice and clearing up my misconceptions.

Really you only need to pick a primary class, you will be able to change secondary shortly after you get off of the starter island. Eles are good for high damage output, but I've found Ranger to be a lot more versatile.

I have 12 characters, one for each profession and an extra LOL. My first and favorite is Manny, whom I'm named after on the forums, who is an Elementalist/ Ranger. I typically run him as a beast master with his level 20 stalker. He runs 80+ in energy and has a health of around 520. He rarely dies and neither does his pet. When its to hairy for Amberlynn, then he pulls out his portal staff and whops on people with fire or whatever lovely nasty he wants. :D I'd always choose Elementalist over the other profession, unless you simply want the armor or primary attribute of the other profession. Why turn up your nose at that much energy? You will find more fire skills at Michiko too . . . NF seems to specialize in Earth damage for the most part.

Welcome to the game.

Play them both, LOL. That's why you are given 4 slots to start out with, and if you combine all your campaigns, you'll have 8 total. I went and purchased a few slots at the in game store and have 16 total (10 for each profession PvE, 2 for permanent pre-searing chars...that's the tutorial area in Prophecies, and 4 slots for PvP chars/"mule" chars) on my main acct. I love playing each of my chars in their own, unique way.

Even more replies, thank you.

I took your advice and I am playing both my E/Me and my R/E.

The E/Me so far is crazy. Just alot of destruction and quick fights.

The R/E seems to kill a bit slower, but seems to have a few more tricks up it's sleeve.

Still both are a lot of fun.

I do have another question though. I've been reading both these forums, and the Guild wars Guru forums. It said that for Elementalists fire is the "standard" nuke build. (yay) That it's usually preferred among groups of live players etc.

Yet I recall reading another post where a person was talking about the woe's of pugging in Nightfall, grouped with an Elementalist that was fire focused, as if that choice was the dumbest thing the Ele could of done.

Is fire a poor choice going through the Nightfall campaign?

Your element of choice won't have a much impact on playing through the game, except in areas where the enemies are more resistant to that element. Water is quite a bit slower at killing than fire or earth, but has skills to slow the enemy down. Air is good for dropping a single target or blinding non-casters.

It was probably more about the skills the person had, not them being fire focused, fire is probably the most common PvE element due to how fast it can kill mobs.

I'm not that experienced with eles so take my posting with grain of salt.

Fire is usually ideal for direct damage - most destructive element with a lot of AoE spells

Water has a lot of snares and hexes which can slow enemies down and to some extend interrupt them.

Earth is the most defensive element - a lot of defensive oriented spells alto it does have nice attack spells with knockdowns.

Air has damage potential but seem to be more focused than the fire and can interrupt.

There are situations where you'd want to focus on element over other.
