Getting Started

What is Guild Wars Traders?

It is a specially tailored trading environment designed for Guild Wars  where game items can be exchanged for other game items or auctioned for in-game currency.

How is it different from trade forums?

Guild Wars Traders  is a much more structured environment to trade where items are placed within categories and sub categories allowing you to easily locate items you may wish to purchase or track.

Each member has a Reputation Ranking within Guild Wars and this acts as a quick identifier as to the member's track record.  Member Profiles detail trading history in more detail so you can judge whether a particular member is someone you wish to trade with.

What are the rules and policies?

How do I register?

How much does it cost to become a member?

Selling

What is the difference between a 'Trade' and an 'Auction'?

  • A trade is where you swap an item for another item.
  • An Auction is where you swap your item for in-game currency.

How do I place a Trade?

You  this form. You will need to complete all fields of the form.  You can place an image of your item by using the full url http://www.mysite.com/myimage.jpg. This is often preferable because shoppers can see the stats of the item for themselves and there is no chance of confusion though typographical errors on the seller's part.

Make sure you are clear about what you are looking for in exchange for your item so members know what to offer you.

Why can I not post multiple items in one trade entry?

Guild Wars Traders Reputation Ranking System safeguards its members by easily identifying the trading practices of each member. Feedback ratings affect Reputation ranking and only one feedback instance is generated per trade. Trade lists can conclude more than one trade, however feedback can not be left for more than one winner. We have provided a 'Multi-Trade' feature that allows you to place multiple items from one single entry form which will in turn generate the appropriate number of feedback instances should they conclude with a winner.

What happens after I have placed my Trade?

You wait for other members to offer their items in exchange for yours. You can easily track activity on your trades by clicking the links in your Profile. Keeping a close eye on them will also mean you can respond to any comments left on your trade from interested members.

How will my Trade end?

It will either end when the duration you set when you posted the item has expired or you elect to close it early.

If the duration expires naturally you will be sent an email that tells you you have a final 24 hours to select a winner, after which you'll have to repost the trade again or do nothing.

If you elect to close the trade early you are given the option to select a winner and close or just close it and do nothing else.

What happens after I have selected a winning bid?

The winner will be sent an email telling them they have won and you will be sent an email containing their contact details too.  This way you can arrange to meet up in game to exchange your items in game.  As well as the other person's contact details the email will also contain a link to leave a feedback rating for the other person.  The feedback rating you leave will affect their overall Reputation ranking. Negative feedback can not be left until three days after the trade has ended.

How do I place an Auction?

You use this form for Guild Wars. You will need to complete all fields of the form.  The form is the same as placing a trade apart from currency fields at the bottom.

Buyers in auctions are bidding in the currency from the appropriate game and at the bottom of that form you need to set the starting bid.  This is what the first bid must be at least for the bidding to commence.

The 'Reserve' price is the minimum you are willing to sell the item for and it's only when this price has been met by a bidder that the contract to trade between seller and buyer is cemented.  If the Reserve price is not met the seller is not obliged to sell. A reserve price does not need to be set, you can just sell for the highest bid you can get.  Reserve prices are not displayed on the auction, only you will know.

The bid increment is the amount you want the bidding to go up in. This is to prevent bidding rising by 1 copper (or whatever the tiniest amount of game currency is), because you could end up with a page load of bids increasing by 1 copper only. 

How will my Auction end?

The auction will end after the duration you set it to run has expired. At this point an email is sent to you.  It will either tell you your reserve was not met and you can automatically repost the item from your profile or that your reserve price has been met and give you the details of the highest bidder so you can arrange to exchange item for money.  A similar email is sent to the highest bidder informing them they've won and with your contact details. As well as the other person's contact details the email will also contain a link to leave a feedback rating for the other person.  The feedback rating you leave will affect their overall Reputation ranking.  Negative feedback can not be left until three days after the auction has ended.

What Items am I allowed to sell?

Any in game items are appropriate.

How do I know what my item is worth?

Your best bet is to look at other trades selling the same item to see what is being asked for or offered.  Also you can visit the Trade Values Forum and leave a post asking for input, other members and/or a moderator will usually give you some helpers.  Guild Wars Trade Value Forum.

Buying

How do I bid on a Trade?

Use the bidding area at the very bottom of the Trade page. State clearly the item you wish to offer with it's full stats.

You may set a bid timer which means your item is automatically withdrawn from the table when the time has expired.  For example, you may wish to offer an item but only for the next 24 hours, after that you wish the offer to be withdrawn so to save you having to return the next day to retract the bid the timer will do it for you. If you do not specify a duration for the offer it will remain as an offer until the Trade ends or you manually retract it as detailed below.

How do I withdraw a bid on a Trade?

You must retract your bid by typing in the bid area that 'retract all bids'. This means the seller can not accept your offer.  Do this if you wish to retract all bids and offer a new item too.  It will avoid any confusion as to exactly what you are offering to seller.

If you do not inform the seller you no longer wish your bid to be considered and they accept it then you are held accountable for that and you are likely to receive negative feedback from the seller.

How do I bid on an Auction?

You simply type in the amount you wish to offer in in-game currency. The blue text next to the white currency boxes will tell you what your minimum bid can be.

What is 'Maximum Bid' [Proxy Bidding]?

This is a mechanism which allows you to bid and at the same time set an amount that you wish Guild Wars Traders to automatically bid on your behalf which means you do not need to keep revisiting the auction to raise your bid (if you have been outbid by someone else).

For example if the highest bid is 100 gold and you bid 120 gold but set your Maximum Bid to 200 gold Guild Wars Traders will place your initial bid of 100 gold and should that be outbid by another user it will bid again on your behalf just enough to make you the highest bidder again. It will keep doing this until it reaches that 'Maximum Bid' you have set. This is known as proxy bidding.

Can I retract my bid?

No. As with any auction your bid is binding and should it be the highest you are at the very least honour bound to pay the seller that amount.

I have a question for a seller, how can I contact them?

You can use the comment system found on every trade and auction. The seller's comments are in bright yellow to distinguish them.

How do I know what offer to make?

Feedback System

I can't leave negative feedback for someone?

Negative feedback can not be left until 3 days after a trade has finished. This is because it's not always possible for someone to be online every day and so to receive negative feedback because you were busy with work or what-have-you is unreasonable. However, three days is a reasonable amount to time to make yourself available and if you haven't done so in that time then it's legitimately bad trading practice.

What reasons would you leave negative feedback for?

A few of the reasons you would consider the trading experience to be bad would be:

  • Not making contact or responding to your correspondence in order to make the trade in-game.
  • Not showing up in-game at the time you have arranged.
  • Not having the item/money they offered for your item and you have to settle for something else or not being able to trade the item at all with them.
  • Stealing your item/money.  This one is avoidable if you use the trade window carefully and/or the in-game Mail system if there is one.

Someone left me negative/neutral feedback and it wasn't deserved.

In the first instance you should contact the other person, ask them why and if it was a mistake? If not, and their feedback is a true reflection of the experience they had with you you can look at it impartially and either accept it and try to do better next time or write to the appropriate Moderator and ask them to investigate it.

It should be noted that unless an abuse of the system as taken place Moderators very rarely alter feedback.

I left a bad trader negative feedback and he left me some but I didn't deserve it, what can I do?

The onus is on you to prove that it is a case of what's commonly known as 'Revengeback'- when a bad trader is, rightly so, given negative feedback and they reciprocate by leaving bad feedback so it casts doubt on the member who gave them bad feedback. This is why you should keep a copy of all correspondence you exchange and even use the 'Print Screen' option if a conversation in game with the player would support your claim. If you're suspicious of another member then it's wise to take these sorts of precautions and if the suspicions amount to nothing then you can simply discard the mails and screenshots but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Abusing Feedback

The reputation system is very important to the entire online trading mechanism and as such we monitor feedback very closely and deal with abuse in the strongest manner. Multiple feedbacks left as a result of mass trades are not considered fair trading practice. The feedback left for another member should reflect the experience of trading with the other member, overall, and as such we would expect one feedback to be left, even if you traded 15 individual items, as opposed to 15 individual feedbacks for the 15 individual items.

Problems

I can't place trades, what's wrong with my account?

One of three things could be the cause:

1. You have not yet activated your account. You need to follow the instructions in the email Guild Wars Traders sent you when registering. There will be a link in that email to follow to activate your account.

2. Your account has been frozen because you have too many outstanding feedbacks to leave. Integral to the usefulness of Guild Wars Traders is the Reputation system and this relies, in part, on members taking time to leave feedback on each of their complete trades for the other trading member. If you have a number of outstanding feedbacks then you must attend to these before your account is unfrozen.

3. You have been banned. You have violated one or more of the rules of Guild Wars Traders and as such your account has been terminated. You are not permitted to make another account (this will be banned also). You may appeal against this at appeal@rpgtraders.net but in most cases the ban will not be overturned.

I need to report a bad Trade?

You will see the Alert Admin button on every trade and auction. If you hit this you will be presented with a small box to type the reason you are reporting the trade. You can use this for illegal trades, abusive members or any other behaviour you see in a trade that you think is not appropriate. Once you 'Submit' the alert it is sent to the appropriate Moderator who will then deal with it and take appropriate action. The Moderator will not usually reply to the alert.

Help, I lost my password?

No problem.  Simply hit the Lost Password link in the left navigation menu and enter the email address you registered under and the password will be sent there immediately.

I was banned, what now?

Nothing. The banning is applied to the account but also to the individual, so simply reregistering with a different name is not appropriate. That account will be banned too.

I was banned without warning, that's not fair?

It is considered the user agreement agreed to when signing up is all the warning anyone would need.  Break any of these and you'll be banned....that's the warning. However, moderators do on occasion warn when the behaviour is considered relatively minor, correctable and that the member will more than likely heed the warning and take action to improve. If the misbehaviour is considered minor then the member will more than likely be banned outright, without any additional warnings.

I was banned but not told why?

If you honestly do not know why you were banned you can email the appropriate moderator and ask them why.  Sometimes moderators will email a banned member at the time of banning, otherwise it's assumed the member will know why they are banned.

How does the Reputation system work?

Three numbers are calculated:

1. RATINGS: the number of ratings given to the member

2. SCORE: the sum of the (-1, 0, 1) ratings given to the member.

3. PENDING: the number of ratings that the members has yet to provide (to others)

reputation is then calculated as:

(RATINGS + SCORE) / (2*RATINGS + 0.5*PENDING)

and this ultimately gives a percentage out of 100.

This percentage is than translated to user titles as follows:

  • Completed under 10 trades = (Newcomer)
  • 0 - 30% = (Bad Trader)
  • 31% - 50% = (Dubious Trader)
  • 51% - 70% = (Average Trader)
  • 71% - 85% = (Reputable Trader)
  • 86% - 95% = (Illustrious Trader)
  • 96% - 100% = (Godly Trader)
It's up to members to set their own limit of the of which group they will and will not trade with. However, it is advisable to check trading and feedback history of those with Average, Dubious and Bad reputations before doing business with them. 'Newcomer' will display until a member has completed ten trades. However, the feedback for those ten trades is calculated into the reputation percentage.

Why do the number of trades keep changing for people in the Top Five list?

The lists are based on the last 60 days of activity. The numbers go up when you make trades and down when trades drop off the 60 day window.
